Language choice in multilingual communities

Introduction

Hello everyone!

In this Webquest, you are going to look up and learn different words related to socio-linguistics.

These words are gonna help you do a specific task later.

Best of luck!

Task

After defining each of the BOLDED words related to our chapter (Language choice in multilingual communities), discuss the related example below (why do people in rural areas stick to their indigenous language while people in the cities use the language of colonizers?)

A) colonizer, indigenous, creole, and pidgins.

Example: In Paraguay, a small South American country, two languages are used – Spanish, the language of the colonizers, and Guaraní, the American Indian indigenous language. People in Paraguay are proud that they have their own language which distinguishes them from the rest of South America. Many rural Paraguayans are monolingual in Guaraní, but those who live in the cities are usually bilingual. They read Spanish literature, but they gossip in both Spanish and Guaraní.
