sociolinguistics: pidgins and creoles

Introduction

Hello dear students

In this WebQuest we are going to inspect a new concept studied within SOCIOLINGUISTICS which is pidgin and creole languages. We are also going to describe the characteristics of both pidgins and creoles.

sociolinguistics, a branch of linguistics which investigates the relationship between language and society, examines how a new language can come into existence just by the interaction of two groups of people speaking completely different languages.

Task

Q1. Below are some of the features of pidgins and creoles, classify each feature as either a Feature of Pidgin or a Feature of Creole. (6 points). 

1- these languages are spoken in certain very restricted domains.

2- languages with no native speakers.

3- languages that develop complex grammatical systems and rich vocabulary.   

4- these languages include rudimentary vocabulary and basic grammar.

5- they are the native languages of the first generation of people of the less dominant group.

6- they become languages suddenly and quickly due to the urgent need for communication. 

Q.2: illustrate the effect of colonization in creating pidgins and creoles. (2 points) 

Q.3: search for 5 words in Tok Pisin, then draw up the similarities between the creole language and the English language. (2 points)
