Word Formation Processes

In this Webquest you are going to research how new words can come into existence in language. 

The branch of linguistics that studies words as forms is called MORPHOLOGY.

There is a number of Word Formation Processes by which words are created in language. Some Linguists refer to these new words as NEOLOGISMS.

Task

Identify the different word-formation processes involved in producing each of the BOLDED and ITALICIZED words in the sentences below.

The processes mentioned are: acronym, backformation, blending, borrowing, clipping, coinage, compounding, conversion.

  1.  We will carpet this room.
  2. This device will self-destruct in 30 seconds.
  3. This year the show will be simulcast live to 50 different countries
  4. A day return to London, please.
  5. Do you have a xerox machine?
  6. The tax court concluded that the sale was not a bona fide transaction.

  2. Please be prepared to provide justification for any of your Answers in a form of class discussion. You will earn 2 extra points for your Justification.
