Introduction
I will be able to analyze, the social, political, and economic impact if expansion on the U.S. I can come to conclusions based on the growing tensions between the North and South, and how compromise sought to hold the country together.
Task
1.) We will analyze the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 and what were its details relating to compromises between the north and south.
2.) We will learn about the rise of the Republican Party.
3.) We will observe the effects of "Bleeding Kansas" and the local and national reaction to the violence regarding popular sovereignty.
4.) We will be able to connect the context of growing tensions between north and south with Preston Brooks' attack on Charles Sumner on the floor of the Senate.
5.) We will research John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry to learn its effects on the social and political discourse regarding expansion of slavery in the U.S.
Process
1.) Please look at this website to gain an overview of the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. https://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/minute/Kansas_Nebraska_Act.htm We then answer some questions on the main points of the Act.
2.) Put up your Chromebooks, ask for a guided notes copy, and look at the board to learn about the rise of the Republican Party.
3.) Continue looking at the board and watch a short video explaining the horrors of "Bleeding Kansas."
4.) We will look at the online resource and have a group discussion about the Preston Brooks attack on Charles Sumner and how it symbolized the tensions between the north and south. https://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/minute/The_Caning_of_Senator_Charles_Sumner.htm
5.) We will do a guided research on John Brown's Raid at Harpers Ferry. The students and I will look at the following resources and answer verbal and paper questions regarding what we find about the raid.
