The Idea of Home

Introduction

Hi all!

In the last few days, you have gotten to do a lot of reading in Alan Gratz' novel, "Refugee".  I want to break it up today and offer you a slight change in pace.

Below, there will be some clips and websites.  These each have their own set of questions.  Write the answers to your questions in your journals and I will check them when I return next week.

Task

Home:

noun

  1. 1.

the place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household.

"I was nineteen when I left home and went to college"

All of the characters in "Refugee" have had to leave home in search of it elsewhere.  In many cases, these characters had to leave due to some sort of hostility.  Their homes may still be standing or may have been bombed to the ground.  While some people may define home as a physical structure, we are finding that the feeling of home is less about the physical and more so about other things, feelings, and people.

Before we begin, please answer the following:

1)  What is your idea of home?

2)  What is one thing which you personally need in order to call a space home?

Great!  Now, check out this website and listen to one of the three videos available.

https://americanwritersmuseum.org/immigrant-writers-define-home/

All of these authors are immigrants.  They traveled and are no longer anywhere near their home, much like the characters in "Refugee".

3) How does the author you selected define home?

4) Do you believe that you could define home in that way, as well?  Why or why not?

I want you to think about how these authors defined home.  It is not a place but rather a community.

5) Get onto Google or YouTube and look for songs, poems, or videos about home.  Take some time and respond to the author of the song, poem, or video and their definition of what home is.  Some things to discuss:  do you agree or disagree with the authors definition?  Does their definition make you think you might want to adjust or change your own definition?

Include the title of the song/poem/video, authors name, and date it was published (if available).

Answer this question in 2-3 paragraphs.  I suggest the following formatting to help you reach the length for this part of the assignment.

  • Paragraph one:  Talk about the poem/song/video.  Use evidence the from it (quotes!) to support what you believe the author is saying.
  • Paragraph two:  Talk about your own opinion.  Again, do you agree or disagree?  Does their definition make you want to change what you think of it?  Do you know people who would agree with their definition?

I am sorry about missing you all this last week!  I hope you are all doing well and can't wait to see you all again!  Just a reminder that we have online school tomorrow and you can log on to teams.

If there are any issues with you getting onto teams, feel free to send me a text:  313-403-5615

I am having an issues with phone calls.  Do not call me, I won't get the notification and it shows that you called from different numbers than the ones you actually did.  Do not call, I'll get the text.
