Making a Chemist

Introduction

Think of all of these situations:

  • Bread dough rising after we put it in the oven
  • Hormones being slowly released from our glands that help us grow throughout our lives
  • Ice floating on liquid water
  • Crying while cutting onions
  • Leaves changing colors when the seasons change

What do they all have in common?

It may seem like they have no similarities, but they all are bonded in chemistry. Each one of the 5 situations listed above can be explained by chemical principles.

Due to this extreme versatility within the chemistry discipline, there is a great variety of careers to be explored.

Task

Your task is to explore different careers within chemistry. You will make a one page profile of one career in chemistry that seems most interesting to you. Some possible careers that you can explore are:

  • Chemistry Teacher
  • Pharmacist
  • Toxicologist
  • Dentist
  • Doctor
  • Forensic Scientist
  • Cosmetic Chemist
  • Chemical Engineer
  • Chemical Technician
  • Perfumer

You have many other options that you may come across, these are just a few! You will pick one and use the resources provided to research your chosen chemistry career in order to make your one page profile. The next slide will detail what this will look like.

Process

As stated before, you will make a one page profile of a career within chemistry that you find interesting.

1. In order for us to make sure that we explore a variety of possible careers, you will initially choose 5 careers. On a piece of paper, write down the names of 5 careers along with their salary ranges, a brief (2-4 sentences) description of the job, and what level of education is required to have to job. Turn your paper in to me.

2. After you have looked into 5 interesting careers, pick the one that sticks out to you the most. You will now make a one page, digital profile of that career. Your profile should be neat and look nice. It should have color and include graphics. Completing this in a Doc or a Slide will suffice...you will be able to add nice backgrounds and colors this way. Essentially, you are advertising the career you chose, sell it to us! Make us interested/intrigued! Your profile should include:

  • Name of the Career
  • Description of what the job entails (No more than 5 sentences)
  • Salary Range
  • Educational Requirements and/or Required Training
  • Characteristics of Someone Who May be Successful in This Career

Below are links that can be used to gather information for your assignment. You may need to look up minor facts with other sources, but the bulk of your research can be completed with these sources.

Evaluation

Your one page profile will be graded on the following criteria:

  • Neatness. Should look well put together and like you took time to do it.
  • Accuracy. If you use the resources provided, you should be fine. If you do decide to use other resources, be sure to include where you got the information from...if you don't, you will have plagiarized.
  • Grammar. Is all of your information grammatically correct?
  • Spelling. Your profile should be free of grammatical errors.
  • Pictures/Graphics. You should include pictures or graphics that relate to your chosen career.
  • Initial Research of 5 Careers. Be sure to complete and turn in your paper with 5 careers that you researched and listed all the required information for. This is part of your grade.
