Introduction
WELCOME
Hello Grade 7,
So previously we learnt what Equations are and more specifically we explored Linear Equations. Today we will continue to explore Linear Equations. You have been selected to solve linear equations with one variable. Ready? Lets think it through. This. We. Can. Do.
Do you remember these terms?
Before you click on a term try to recall it:
Task
Today, your task will be to will be to browse some lessons on solving linear equations.
You will:
- determine the steps to solve simple linear equations with one variable
- identify the the various appearances of linear equations (how they look)
- apply the steps to solving equations to help you solve more complex linear equations of one variable
These tasks will require access to the web, pencil, paper and an open mind to soak everything in!
Process
Process 1:
Watch the videos below and pause as often as needed to write in your note book(or in a new google doc) the answer to the following questions
1) In your own words tell what opposite operations are
2) What is a mathematical term for opposite operations?
2) What do opposite operations do in general?
3) Observe carefully can you tell how many steps it takes to solve these type of linear equation? how many are there?
5) Write down each of the steps in order
Process 2:
Try the questions on this live worksheet

Process 3:
Now let us explore some other equations, again, pause the video as often as you wish and write the answers to the following questions
1) Are the equations seen in the video linear equations?
2) Verify your response to question 1
3) How are these equations different from the equations in the first set of videos?
4) Observe carefully can you tell how many steps it takes to solve these type of linear equation? how many are there?
5) Write down each of the steps in order
Process 4:
Practice Practice Practice.
Remember: Practice not until you get it right, but practice until you can never get it wrong. (Unknown)

Evaluation
Complete this graded assessment
Section A
| variable, one, two, addition, inverse, subtraction, multiplication, division, step, operation |
Use the words from the box above to complete the sentences. Some words may be used more than once.
1) We can solve ------- ------- equations by applying the ------------ ---------. To isolate the ----------- we undo --------------, --------------, -----------, and ------------.
2) To isolate the ---------- in a -------- ---------- equation undo ---------- or --------------, then -------------- or ---------------.
( 8 marks)
Section B
Show each step clearly and solve the following equations
1) 24 = 13 + x
(2 marks)
2) 14 − x = 5
(2 marks)
3) 5 + x = 19
(2 marks)
4) 13 + 7x = 27
(3 marks)
5) x - 31/ 4 = 2
(3 marks)
6) m/5 + 9 =11
(3 marks)
(TOTAL 23 marks)
FINISH!
Conclusion
On our next Quest we will explore steps to solve more complex linear equations.
Think about it. You can search the web for these other types of Linear equations.
Until next time. Remember: Nothing great or worthwhile doing was ever done without enthusiasm. (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
