Introduction
Chemistry plays an important role in all aspects of our modern world. We rely on chemistry in a number of ways. It is essential for meeting our basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, health, energy, and clean air, water, and soil. Chemical technologies enrich our quality of life in numerous ways by providing new solutions to problems in health, materials, and energy usage. Without our increasing knowledge of the properties and application of materials through chemistry new, more efficient and safer ways of doing things would not be possible.
To many, chemistry is a foreign concept, belonging to the world of academia and textbooks with little relevance to our everyday life. However, you would be hard-pressed to find an aspect of your daily routine that isn’t directly impacted by chemistry research.
Chemistry is the study of molecules: the building blocks of matter. It is central to our existence, and leads our investigations into the human body, Earth, food, materials, energy, and anywhere and everywhere in between.
This task is designed to expand your knowledge of how chemistry is useful in the real world and give you some experience with interesting applications of chemistry and chemical knowledge.

Task
This task involves 3 parts.
Part A - Research
- Choose one of the following Topics:
-
How has biomimicry been used to develop different materials? What biomimicry research is currently happening
-
How are ocean oil spills treated? Does the cleaning up of oil spills lead to a different set of problems for society?
-
Are sunscreens containing nanoparticles safe? What precautions should be taken in working with nanomaterials?
-
Should a product’s life cycle be considered prior to the product being available to consumers? Is ‘green chemistry’ a social and political priority?
-
- Go to the appropriate reference material to learn some background about your topic. Then, choose at least 3 reliable, accurate resources to help build your understanding of the topic and address the questions.
- Write notes to cover all the content.
Part B - Presentation
- Choose a digital presentation format (PPT, Canva, Publisher etc).
- Present your information in the chosen format in a way that addresses the question and is appealing to an audience.
Part C - Evaluation
- You will need to complete a short survey to evaluate you own performance and producivity throuhjoputut the assessment, as well as an assessment of the final product.
