Expressing Obligation Through Dialog

Introduction

This Webquest is designed for junior high school students, especially for 8th grade where students learn to state about obligation expression within certain conversation.

Introduction

In this webquest, students are going to learn about obligation expression used when talking with the other. Some of the task will be conducted by the students with sources contained in this web as guidance in understanding the material. Therefore, students can finally practice their writing skill regarding to obligation expression.

Task

Task  

You are within a group consist of four people talking about certain topics using obligation expression.

To do this, you need to work in group and do the following activities below:

Each student in the group are required to discuss all of these four topics below during this work: 

  • Household
  • School
  • Jobs
  • Groceries

 

  1. Each student of the group need to write down four questions (one question for each topic listed above) in a paper. Write these questions to your friend about how they perform regarding of the topic based on your experience or daily conversation, such as “Have you already done our group work?” or “Must you work so hard in this job?”, previously are simple examples you can get while writing certain questions. Furthermore you can also make up some questions from other sources as you need. (Individual work)

 

  1. After writing the question, student must exchange the paper with one of the partner chosen from the group, for example: (Student A with Student C) and (Student B with Student D). Then a student and his/her partner must answer the question using obligation expression. Work in pair to share some of ideas with your partner in further developing your answers. (Pair work)

 

  1. Afterward, combine both question and answer from each pair, then make a short conversation from topics above that has been done into one dialog in a sheet of paper. You can add some extra sentences such as greetings, time and place (setting), discussion, goodbye (closing), and others to complete the dialog.(Group work)

Process 1 – Writing a Question

  • Firstly, students must write down four questions (one question for each topic) in a paper directed to the other student.
  • The question that highlighted must contain interrogative expression regarding to obligation as you can see in the previous example on the table above.
  • It is highly advised to choose appropriate sentences when asking about obligation, you can click the link below to help finding certain questions references that you might need.

Process 2 – Writing the answer

  • After finishing the question, student exchange the paper with another student and make it as a partner.
  • Each student writes down their answer in paper using obligation expression sentence based on four questions given by other student.
  • Make sure the expression have a clear and good structure such as affirmative, negative, and interrogative.
  • Finally, when all the questions are answered, take a picture of the paper as an evidence of your work.

Process 3 – Making a Dialog

  • Make the dialog in a paper for these topics by working in group. This dialog is the fusion from your questions and answers in previous activity. So in other word, you need to combine questions and answers sentences into one meaningful dialog based on topics mentioned. There are some of requirements to fulfill this process:

 

Requirements for dialog:

  • Dialog from these topics must contain at least 200 words.
  • All students have to participate as role in the dialog.  
  • Both affirmative and negative expression need to appear in dialog at least once.
  • There must be opening and closing sentence in the conversation.
  • The dialog must have clear setting to indicate base of plot in the conversation. (house, café, restaurant, office, etc)

 

 

  • Add certain sentences to extend the dialog as you see fit, also both questions and answers must related to other sentences in the conversation so the dialog as a whole can be reasonable.
  • After finish all the task above, take a photo of your work and then send it to the teacher’s email to be graded.

Relation of sentences

The relation of expression doesn’t match with the question at all

The relation of expression both from the questions and answers are matched, but extra sentences don’t fit as addition to the expression

The relation of expression from questions and answers are matched and extra sentences functioning properly even though some words are stiff

All relation both from expressions and extra sentences are greatly connected to each other in proficient level   

 

Structure of expression in sentence

The word used in the expression doesn’t make sense thus the structure is weak

The word in expression is correct but doesn’t match with the whole sentence

The expression is correct and subject used in sentence beforehand are related, but the object later in the sentence are false

Both expression and sentence are correct. Subject, Object, even Predicate are related to the expression thus creates strong structure

 

Grammar

The words written have bad grammar and can’t be understood

The grammar have a lot of mistake but still understandable

The grammar is decent and few mistake occurred, however most of them are understandable

The grammar is excellent, there is little to zero mistake and the words are easy to understand

 

Conclusion

Conclusion

After learning a brief session in this webquest, students are expected to fully understand the structure and entirety of the material about obligation expression. Furthermore, this might encourage the students to use it in conversation and expand their knowledge on English language.
