Weathering and Erosion

Introduction

We are going to learn about two slow Earth events that happen on Earth. They are Erosion and Weathering! We are going to learn a bit more about these slow processes. You will complete a graphic organizer as you complete this web quest.

Task

You will be completing a graphic organizer. It has three parts. You will tell what they are, provide an example, and draw a picture of an example or what it might look like. Be sure to read carefully and pay attention to what you are learning. After you have finished your graphic organizer and research, you will answer questions to test your knowledge.

Process

What is Weathering and Erosion?

Weathering and Erosion are both very slow events that happen on Earth.

Weathering is the process of breaking rocks into smaller pieces.

Erosion is the movement of weathered rock from one place to another.

Weathering breaks the rock and Erosion moves it. If a rock changes or breaks but stays where it is, this is called weathering. A process in which pieces of weathered rock are moved away is erosion.

Wind, water, ice, and gravity can play a part in weathering and erosion.

What kind of erosion do you think caused this rock formation?

Conclusion

Great job! Today we learned all about Erosion and Weathering. These two processes are slow Earth events that helps cause the changes that we see here on Earth. So the next time you feel the wind, see a river, or any other major force just know that these forces are helping to change the Earth's surface!

Performance Expectation

Use information from several sources to provide evidence that Earth events can occur quickly or slowly

Clarification Statement

Examples of events and timescales could include volcanic explosions and earthquakes, which happen quickly, and

erosion of rocks, which occurs slowly.

Disciplinary Core Ideas

THE HISTORY OF PLANET EARTH- Some events happen very quickly; others occur very slowly, over a time period much longer than one can observe. (LE.ESS1C.a)

DEFINING AND DELIMITING ENGINEERING PROBLEMS- Asking questions, making observations, and gathering information are helpful in thinking about problems. (ETS.LE.1A.b)
