Students Travel through Time to the Three Civilizations in the Americas: A WebQuests Adventure

Introduction

This lesson is on a history unit on comparing the forms of writing that developed in the three civilization of the Americas, (Aztecs, Maya, Inca/Olmec).  It will show how written records shaped political, legal, religious, and cultural life.

The overview of this lesson will be done through a webquests that will be given the same name.  Students will travel through time to the three civilizations. Students will document daily in a journal that will cover every aspect of their journey to the Aztecs, Mayas, and Inca/Olmecs.

Students will create a poster board displaying an example of the comparison of the forms of writing that were developed in the three civilizations in the Americas.

This portion of the unit on webquests will conclude in two weeks.

Task

Students will learn why the three civilization thought it was important to create some type of documentation such as writing.

The students will be able to research information on the writing that developed in the three civilizations in the Americas

Students will know how this development helped the three civilization keep adequate records.

The students will be able to gain experience in navigating the webquests.

The students will be able to display examples of the writings from the three civilizations.

 

Process

While in class students will have access to computers so they can research the comparison on the forms of writing that  developed in the three civilization of the Americas. 

Students will have access to school issued chrome books they can take home to continue researching. 

Students will have opportunities to go to computer lab before and after school. 

Students will be issued one journal book each so they will be able to document information they gathered and save for future use.

Students will be issued one poster board to display the examples of the writings from the three civilizations.

Evaluation

At the end of two weeks, students will present their display their poster boards which will have an example of the writing from each of the three civilizations (Aztes, Maya, Inca/Olmecs).

The teacher will discuss with the students a list of questions their peers might ask during the presentation.

Students will be provided an opportunity to tell what they learned from each of the displays.

The student’s poster boards will be placed on exhibition in the hallway outside the room.

Students will be given 10-question multiple choice test at the end of the two weeks period on the forms of writing that were developed in the three civilizations in the Americas.

Conclusion

The teacher will assist students as needed throughout the process of navigating the webquests.

Posters will be supplied to all students so the examples of the three civilizations writings will be displayed.

The teacher will check journals daily to ensure students are documenting information they researched and to ensure their writing skills are readable.

I know that some students may have difficulties navigating the webquests.  I will have a couple of  teacher assistants in my classroom for the two weeks period we are on this topic.  I will also have links to websites on the forms of writing that developed in the three civilizations in the Americas that will be available to all students.
