Metamorphosis: Butterflies!

Introduction

Craig's life cycle (monarch butterfly)

The Butterfly Life Cycle is a beautiful process in which butterflies start out as tiny eggs! Butterflies go though a process called metamorphosis, which we will learn about together!

Today we are going to discover the process of metamorphosis and observe the butterfly life cycle.

Task

Butterflies start out as tiny eggs on a leaf and eventually become butterflies!

How do tiny butterfly eggs become butterflies?

What are the stages of the life cycle of a butterfly?

What do you notice about caterpillars?

What do you notice about butterflies?

What do caterpillars eat?

Process

Please view these video and make a few observations about each stage of the life cycle.

Observations!

You will need a sheet of paper and a pencil.

After watching these videos, jot down a few observations you have made about the butterfly life cycle. For example, "I observed the butterfly life cycle and noticed that the caterpillar stage looks different than the egg stage because _______".

Be creative with your observations and try to write down at least three unique observations.

Make your own butterfly using a Graphic Organizer!

Graphic Organizers are a way we can write down and draw our recent learning so that we can see what we have learned! You will create a graphic organizer of the butterfly life cycle, label the stages, and draw and color them. Don't worry if your butterfly looks different than your neighbors, I want to see your individual creativity!

You will need paper and crayons, colored pencils, or markers.

Using the life cycle of the butterfly, you are going to follow it exactly and create your own butterfly! Next, get a sheet of paper out and your favorite set of crayons, colored pencils, or markers and create the butterfly life cycle. You can use any color you want for your butterfly, but remember that butterflies are symmetrical, which means that their wings look like a reflection! Please label all life cycle stages.

The Butterfly Egg: Make sure your butterfly eggs are drawn on a leaf and labelled.

The Caterpillar: Caterpillars need to eat a lot of leaves so they can grow! You can draw several different sizes of caterpillars to show this growth, but be sure to label them so you know the difference between a young caterpillar and an older one!

The Pupa: Draw your pupa and label it. Make sure your pupa is correctly attached to a tree limb so that it will not fall off!

The Butterfly: Please draw your butterfly using any color scheme you want! Make sure to label your butterfly life cycle correctly!

Personal Reflections

On the back of your observation sheet please answer the following questions.

Have you ever seen a butterfly in person?

What did you think about the butterfly? Was it resting on a leaf or flying around?

What colors were on the butterflies wings?

Did you find out what kind of butterfly it was?

Conclusion

You have successfully learned about the Life Cycle of Butterflies! Take your graphic organizer and your observations and share your findings with a friend!

If you discover something else about the butterfly life cycle that you did not notice before, be sure to write that down as a bonus observation.
