Essential Question: Module 1

How does change impact people and nature?

Focusing Question: Lessons 1-3

What changes in "Weather?"

Content Framing Question: Lesson 1

Wonder: What do I notice and wonder about the pome "Weather?"

Craft Question: Lesson 1

Examine: Why is it important to read fluently?

Students explore how change affects people and the natural world. Students will begin the routine of noticing and wondering about a new text. To prepare for the routine, students discuss an important listening goal, examine question words, and wonder and notice about four fine arts paintings. Students then begin building fluency through repeated reading of the poem "Weather." Finally, students share observations and questions about the poem.

Task
  • Students will form small groups. The teacher will distribute module text so each group has one copy of the title.
  • The teacher will post and read the questions: "What do you notice about these text?"
  • What do you think you will learn in this module?
  • Students will look closely at the front and back covers, titles, and pictures.
  • Students discuss the posted questions within their groups.
Process

Process:

After looking over each piece of art you should be able to answer and identify the following questions:

Launch:

  •  "How does change impact people and nature?"
  • What does the word "impact" mean?
  • What does the word "change" mean?
  • The teacher will have students provide an example of things that change in nature, or "all things that are not made by people."
  • "Lucky ducks" will be used to call on students responses.
    • Caterpillars change into butterflies.
    • Seeds change into flowers or trees.
    • The tides change at the beach.
  • Focusing Question: Lesson 1-3
    • What changes in "Weather?"

Learn:

Today you are going to notice many things, including details in poetry, visual art, and what people say.

  • Can you notice what your classmates say?
  • When people speak, they often need time to get to a big idea at the end of their thoughts.
  • When we interrupt by asking a question or adding an idea, we are not listening for the whole message.
  • We will listen carefully for the big idea and wait for the person to pause before you add your comment or question.
  • If you listen to the whole message, your question might be answered.

Why is it important to notice the whole message when we listen?

  • Think-Pair-Share and listen to the whole message as your partner speaks before you answer.
  • If we notice the whole message we can understand all of what someone is saying, and not just part.
  • Noticing the whole message is respectful to the person who is talking.
  • You may think differently about what they are trying to say.

Notice and Wonder About Visual Art

Small groups:

  • We are going to practice noticing and wondering about works of art.
  • When we are looking at art, it is important to take time to examine the entire work, letting your eyes wander over the entire image, and notice all the details.
  • We are going to observe four paintings.

  • You are going to work in small groups to notice and wonder about one of these works of art.
  • You will discuss and record observations about your painting in your reading journal.
  • After we have completed this task, we will do a gallery walk and rotate around the room to examine other groups paintings and your notice and wonder charts in your notebooks. (I have these four paintings printed in color to divide students into groups for them to examine the art, after we look at each individual piece as a whole group).

Whole Group:

  • Students will notice and wonder about the poem "Weather" by Eve Merriam.

  • Students will stand up and join me in "Choral Read" as they will follow my voice as I read the poem.
  • We will be looking at reading each word correctly.  (the criteria for fluent reading are: accuracy "reading without mistakes," phrasing (chunking text into small, meaningful pieces," rate "appropriate speed," expression "changing our voice to show feeling," and performance "articulation and volume).
  • Reading every word correctly is the first goal we are going to have for reading this poem.
  • We are going to look at fluency. Focus on when we need to pause while reading.
  • We are going to focus on commas and periods to show where we need to stop or pause.
  • Punctuation is not going to be present in each line of poetry, and it sometimes can be harder to read than books.
  • Every two lines of the poem form a "stanza" that shows when to pause.

Students will be evaluated on whether they were able to complete these specific tasks to prepare them for their first Focusing Task Question Assessment that follows after lesson 3.

Conclusion

Conclusion:

Did you have fun notice and wondering about all the different poems we did today?

You did such a great job working together! There is still so much to learn about the books in the upcoming lessons, especially about seasons and weather. We will save that for another day. We can learn from library books, websites, and one another about all the details of weather and seasons, if you are interested, we can look into it on our free time! :)

Students will learn about a poem called "Weather." Students will also look at four different images where they will be able to notice and wonder about the images.

This is a literature based WebQuest designed for 2nd Graders.

Seasons are introduced at a young age. As my students move forward with their Wit and Wisdom Modules, they will learn about all four seasons and how they change.
