Introduction

Good Day Class , and welcome back!

I hope you are all doing well under the current circumstances we find ourselves in, even though we may be working from school it is very important to still keep on track when it comes to our academics.

In Today's lesson we will be focusing on Figures of Speech.

By the end of this lesson you should be able to understand the various figures of speech and be able to even apply them to the literature work that you may be covering in the curriculum.

FIGURES OF SPEECH:

IDENTIFY WHICH FIGURE OF SPEECH WAS USED IN THE FOLLOWING SENTANCES:

  1. He has a heart of gold.
  2. Shannon’s smile was as bright as the suns shine.
  3. Life’s a journey : travel it well
  4. A wicked whisper came to me and it changed my life.
  5. Men’s words are bullets that their enemies take up and make use of against them.
  6.  He roared with the force of ten thousand lions.
  7. There had been no rain for months and all the crops were death. Some parts of the farm were beginning to look like a desert.
  8. The theatre is his home.
  9. After a good night sleep, I felt like a million dollars.

1. Look closely at the various figures of speech.

2. Identify the differences between the figures of speech.

3. Be able understand Literal language vs Figurative Language.

  • a simile is a Direct Comparison that always contains the words “as “ or “ like”
  • He is as wealthy as Bill Gates
  • Her personality is like a bubble in a bottle of champagne.
  1. Metaphor
  • A metaphor is a comparison without the use of “as “or “like”
  • A metaphor refers to one object being link another
  • The comparison is implied rather than being stated directly
  • He is a Bill Gates. this implies that he is as rich as bill gates
  • She is a bubble in a bottle of champagne , this implies that her personality is as bubbly as a bubble in a bottle of champagne
  1. Hyperbole
  • A hyperbole is an over exaggeration which is not meant to be taken literally.
  • It aims to create humour or to emphasise a point
  • The teacher complained that she had hundreds of interruptions that day
  • She prepared enough food to feed an army.
  1. Personification
  • Personification gives human qualities to inanimate objects or abstract ideas .
  • Personification and metaphors are similar in that they are both indirect comparisons.
  • Autumn arrived in his coat of orange, red and gold .
  • The Clouds looked down and wept on the drought stricken earth .
  • Pride embraced her as she went up to receive her award
  1. Alliteration
  • Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words , it often highlights the expression of movement
  • Football fever fuels fans
  • -Rampant Rooney crushes Croatia
  1. Assonance
  • Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds
  • The eccentric Emily enthused her listeners.
  • Clap your hands and stamp your feet
  • Girls in curls swirled around the stage
  1. Oxymoron
  • An oxymoron places two seemingly contradictory words next two each other

 

  • The mother waved her son off to war with a painful pride
  • The accused felt an angry relief when she was proved innocent
  • The litter at the school was a pretty ugly sight. 
  1. Paradox
  • A paradox is a seemingly absurd or contradictory statement which when analysed is found to be true.
  • “ you will kill him with your kindness

         ( your kind deeds are doing more harm than good)

  1. Literal language :
  • Literal or denotative language is factual

  1. Figurative language :
  • Figurative or connotative language makes use of comparisons and suggestive ideas .
