Process

Remember figures of speech are most important in literature and poetry.  There two we discussed in class are comparisons.

To find Simile  you need to check for the words  LIKE or AS as soon as you see either of these words in a poem you know you are dealing with a Simile

A metaphor is a direct comparison without the usage of the word like or as e.g. He was a lion in the fight. Here you are Comparing one's strength to a lion saying he was the lion because of his strength.

Evaluation

Complete the following exercise in your books and we will mark in class.

State whether a metaphor or a Simile

1.my love is a red, red rose...........

2. He is as tall as a giraffe...........

3. Death is captain of the ship........

4.the rain came down in long knitting needles

5. Your heart is as pure white as snow......

Conclusion

So today we dealt with two figures of speech

1 metaphor a direct comparison without the use of the word like or as. Often too confusing and difficult to find take your time. If it is neither all the others then it is a metaphor.

2. Simile comparison using the words like or as. The words won't necessarily be together in the sentences, at time you will find like alone or as alone.
