Simple, Compound and Complex sentences.

Introduction

Different types of sentences.

There are 3 types of sentences which is defined by many things. No, I'm not talking about things such as a statement or question sentence. These sentences are defined by the verb and the object and subject. The 3 sentences are Simple, Compound and Complex sentence.

Here is the link to the video explaining the concepts and giving few examples:

There is questions in the evaluation tab. I will provide you the answers once you are done.

Process

When identifying a sentence, use these steps:

  • Finite verb: If there is only one it means it is a simple sentence, if there is two or more, it is a compound or complex sentence.
  • Clauses: if there is two main clauses (2 sentences that can stand on its own) it is a compound sentence. If there is one main clause and one subordinate clause (1 sentence that can stand on its own and 1 sentence that doesn't make sense if you leave it alone) it is a complex sentence.
  • Conjunction: If there is a conjunction, it is either a compound or complex sentence.
  • Subject: If there is only one subject, it is a simple sentence. If there is more than one subject, it is a compound or complex sentence.

Carefully evaluate these 4 aspects of the sentence to see what type of sentence it is.

A easy to remember phrase will help you remember. FCCS (Finn Cleanly Cuts Spanich).

I have put some links to websites that will explain the sentences a bit more in the credits.

Evaluation

When we write a test and I ask you to identify what sentence the following sentence is and give a reason why you have indicated this answer. You have to motivate your answer along with your answer. Those will normally be 2 mark questions.

I can also ask you to analyse the sentence and indicate what sentence it is. You will then have to identify the finite verbs, subjects, conjunctions and main or subordinate clauses. These questions can range from 3-5 marks.
