English Home Language - Summary Writing Grade 8

Introduction

In today's lesson we will specifically be focusing on 'Summary Writing'.

Students should have some idea as to what a 'summary' is.

Definition of a summary:

  • A short, clear description that gives the main facts or ideas about something.
  • A summary omits (ignores) details and does not include the readers interpretation of the original text.

Teacher highlights a few points as to what a good summary is and also HOW to write a summary of a short piece of writing.

Read the instructions in the Task phase very carefully!

Read the passage below and write down seven main points on how to get out of bed in the morning without any hesitation.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. List SEVEN points in full sentences, using not more than 70 words.

2. Your summary must be written in point form.

3. Number your sentences from 1 to 7 and leave a line open between sentences.

4. Write only ONE point per sentence

5. Use your OWN words as far as possible.

6. Indicate the total number of words you have used in brackets at the end of your summary.

Get out of bed with a spring in your step

Pounding the pavements at 7am isn't for everyone, but if you can manage some gentle movement it can help wake up body and mind.

If you know you have something nutritious and delicious to eat, then you might be more likely to get out of bed for it! Rather than rush out of the door with a slice of toast, make time for a breakfast you really enjoy and that will set you up with enough energy to last until lunch time. If you're still not motivated enough to get up, then making a morning plan with friends might give you an extra nudge out of bed.

Snoozing the alarm can be a difficult habit to break and at first it seems counter intuitive, with many of us thinking that an extra ten minutes sleep will help us feel more energized when we do get out of bed. However, according to experts hitting the snooze button repeatedly does not give you good quality sleep as you don't have time to fall back into a deep sleep, so try to get up as soon as your alarm goes off.

Just as dimming down the lights at night helps encourage production of the hormone melatonin, which makes us feel sleepy, exposing yourself to light in the morning will help to stop production, therefore waking you up.

After a full night's sleep, you're probably a little dehydrated, and for whatever reason, drinking water just seems to help the body realize that it's time to get up. Alcohol can make you feel sleepy but consumed too close to bedtime can also disrupt sleep.

Process

Students have about 20 minutes to attempt to write a good summary, after reading the 'Get out of bed with a spring in your step' reading piece, following the instructions clearly.
