Animal Nutrition: Digestion

Introduction

https://youtu.be/qDqK2Ckb0Yc

Digestion is the breakdown of large insoluble food molecules into small water-soluble food molecules so that they can be absorbed into the watery blood plasma. In certain organisms, these smaller substances are absorbed through the small intestine into the blood stream. This process occurs in the human body. The human digestive system consists of the alimentary canal and accessory organs. The alimentary canal is a long, tubular structure that extends throughout the body. It consists of the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestines and anus. The accessory organs include tongue, salivary glands, pancreas, liver and gall bladder.

Task

At the end of this WebQuest you will have acquired the following knowledge and be able to answer the following questions:

  • Trace the movement of food through the digestive system
  • Know different types of Digestion
  • Know enzymes involved in digestion

From the introduction of this lesson, I mentioned that the digestive system is consists of the alimentary canal and accessory organs. Use the diagram of the digestive system below to answer the following questions

  1. Give labels to the digestive system below
  2. Name two different types of digestion.

                                             Pin on Notebook

Process

Step 1

  1.  Click on the YouTube Link below and watch the video clip.

Mechanical Digestion

2. After watching the video, write down your name and surname on a word document, followed by the answers to the following questions:

  1. What is Mechanical digestion?
  2. Give one word for the following definitions
  • Taking food into the body through the mouth.

  • A process of biting and grinding of food by teeth to make it easier to swallow.

  • The involuntary constriction and relaxation of the muscles of the gut wall, creating wave-like movements that push food down.

Step 2

1. Click on the YouTube Link below and watch the video.

2. On the word document that you have created, continue by answering the questions that will follow below.

Chemical Digestion

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzfCOteRoxw

  • Define Chemical Digestion?
  • What are the enzymes used to breakdown proteins, fats and carbohydrates and give the end products after the breakdown.

  • After answering all these questions, save your word document and rename it using your initials, surname and the Topic of this lesson.
  • Lastly submit by sending it to me using my email that I have provided in the teacher page.
Evaluation

The mark allocation for the questions above is as follows:

The Questions in:

Task= Total of 10 marks

  • 8 marks for Labeling
  • 2 marks for the types of Digestion

Step 1= Total of 5 marks

  • 2 marks for definition
  • 3 marks for one word

Step 2= Total of 8 marks

  • 2 marks for definition
  • 6 marks for enzymes and end products.
Conclusion

Digestion is very important because humans require nutrients from food so that they can get enough energy to carry out life processes such as growth and reproduction. And to obtain these nutrients digestion has to occur so that the nutrients can be absorbed.
