English FAL: Poetry (THE ROAD NOT TAKEN)

Introduction

Afternoon Grade 10s. Today our lesson is going to be about Poetry and we will be studying The Road not Taken by Robert Frost.

Before you read the poem, I want you to think about a difficult choice which you had to make.

Task

You are familiar with the following concepts:

  • Literal or denotative language -The ordinary(dictionary) meaning of the words.
  • Figurative or connotative meaning - something that is not to be interpreted literally but that is instead uses a symbol or a likeness.

Answer the below questions after listening to the poem.

  1. Explain the meaning of 'diverged'.                                                                                                                               (1)
  2. Give an antonym for 'diverged'.                                                                                                                                   (1)
  3. In line 1, the speaker refers to a 'yellow wood' What do you see as the literal and figurative meanings of 'yellow'?  (2)
  4. Refer to Stanzas 1 and 2
  •  Quote a word from Stanza 1 which indicates that the speaker felt a trace of regret.                                                  (1)
  •  What word in Stanza 4 endorses this?                                                                                                                        (1)

     5. An extended metaphor is a comparison which extends throughout the poem. With reference to the diction used(word choice), explain the extended metaphor on which the poem is based?                                                                                               (4)

Process

In order for you to finish the task you need to do these following things below:

  • Firstly you need to watch the video in the introduction and get a hint on what the poem is talking about.
  • You need to watch and listen the video of the poem 'The Road not Taken'.  When listening to the video you need to listen with understanding so that you can be able to answer the questions.
  • Watch the Figurative and Literal video till you understand it.
  • Try to answer with your own understanding.
  • Familiarize yourself with myriad forms of poetry.
  • Listen with understanding, so that you can know what the poem is talking about and the content of it.
  • Try to write as more possible answers you can so that you can score high marks.

Analysis of poem Not all questions are answered. No thought is put in answers. Some questions about the poem are answered, little thought is put into the answers. Writing components. The statements are filled with writing errors(spelling, punctuation, etc). The are little writing errors. The are less than 2 writing errors. The are no writing errors.

Poem contains most poetic devices and correct rhyme and meter. Poem contains most poetic devices ans correct rhyme and meter and shows a comprehension of excellent poetry and real world connections.
