Mathematical Literacy - Data Handling (Measures of Central Tendency)

Introduction

Good day grade 10. Our topic for today's lesson will be data handling, mainly the measures of central tendency. We will be focusing on the basic concepts of this topic, then on our next class we will go deep into the topic.

Watch the video below for the lesson... and have your notebook with you.

Task

A grade 12 teacher conducted a survey to determine the number of learners who played sports, sang in a choir, attended drama classes and those who just went home after school. He managed to get the information from all the learners, and presented it in the table below:

SCHOOL SURVEY
GRADE SPORTS CHOIR DRAMA NONE TOTAL
8                   30                15                   40                125
9                   25                23                   35                101
10                   39                30                   28                  99
11                   29                23                   50                 100
12                   30                35                   15                 120

 1. From the data collected, answer the following questions :

a) Calculate the total number of learners in each grade. (4)

b) How many learners went to this high school? (3)

c) Calculate the range. (3)

d) What is the mode? (2)

e) Determine the mean average. (5)

f) Arrange the data in an ascending order and go on to show how would you find the median. (5)

Process

In order to complete this task, you have to watch the introduction of the topic and write down notes to get a better understanding of the topic. You should also watch the videos below to help you have a clear picture of the topic and how it works..

Evaluation

In questions that require calculations :

1. Learners must show all their calculations.

2. If the learner shows all the steps of the calculations and receives the correct answer, the learner gets full mark.

3. If the learner just show the final answer without calculations, a mark will be deducted from the total mark of the question.

4. If the learners uses the correct steps but gets an incorrect answer, the learner will get a mark for the question.

5. If the learner uses incorrect steps but receives a correct answer, the learner will receive two marks the question.

Conclusion

After the lesson and the task, each learner should be able to :

* Understand the measures of central tendencies.

* Collect and organize data.

* Display and interpret data.

* Answer questions related to data handling.
