Mathematical literacy grade 11 : Introduction to Data Handling

Introduction

Good day Grade 11's!

Today's lesson will be based on data handling which will be of great practice to prepare and become familiar with data handling before writing your June exam.

Data handling will give you the ability to:

- Identify and solve problems with data.

- Identify the mean, median, mode and range.

Use the link to view an introduction to data handling ( Mode, median, mode and range).

Task

When we have a set of data given the steps are as follows:

  • Step 1: we always arrange the data in ascending order (ranging from smallest to the biggest)
  • Step 2: when we calculate the range, the formula is the highest value minus (-) the smaller value.
  • Step 3: When we calculate the median, this simply mean that when you have arranged your data in ascending order then we count the number of values that is in the data set and select the number in the middle for example:

21 21 22 24 24 25 27

In this case the median would be 24.

When we have an equal amount of values that gives us 2 median's, in this case we add the 2 median's and divide them by 2 for example:

33 34 35 36

In this case the median would be 34 + 35 = 69 then we divide the answer by 2, 69/2 = 34,5.

  • Step 4: The mean is referred to the average of the data set you are working with. When we calculate the mean: we add up all the numbers then thereafter we divide it by the number of values in the data set for example:

12 12 13 13 14

So we add up all the numbers, 12 + 12 + 13 + 13 + 14 = 64

Then we take the total and divide it by the number of values.

64/5 = 12,8.

  • Step 5: The mode is simply the number that appears the most in the data set for example:

10 10 12  13 14 14 14

In this case the mode is 14.

If we have no value that appears more then once then there is simply no mode.

It is possible to have more than one mode, we call it bimodal.

Process

Use the data set below which consist of ages of all females in grade 11 C:

16 17 16 18 16 15 16 18 18 16 17 15

  • What is the range?
  • Identify the mode?
  • What is the median of the data set provided?
  • Calculate the mean in this data set?

Evaluation

First we arrange the data set in ascending order.

15 15 16 16 16 16 16 17 17 18

Range: 18 - 15 = 3

Mode: 16 The value that appears the most)

Median: 16 + 16 = 32

32/2 = 16

Mean: 15 + 15 + 16 + 16 + 16 + 16 + 16 + 17 + 17 + 18 = 162

162/10

=16,2

Conclusion

Well Done !!!

Once you completed the exercise and have went through the notes provided and watched the videos provided by the links, you should have the basic foundation of what data handling entails.

You have the skill set to deal with basic data handling whether it be in your Mathematical Literacy classroom or in real life encounters where this skill is applicable.

Now that you have the foundation to deal with data handling, watch the video provided below to gain insight on the next step in we will deal with next week.

So in this constant evolving time we living in, I chose to do this lesson to provide some basic fundamental insight on data handling in Mathematical literacy to give learners the opportunity to familiarize themselves with working with small data sets.

This will serve as a foundation and will be elaborated on in due course whilst keeping in line with the curriculum.

This also serves as invite for my fellow colleges to grasp an opportunity to engage in e-learning, taking into consideration how beneficial and user friendly as well as effective WebQuest is.

Thank you.
