Measurement systems (Metric Sytem)

Introduction

The Metric system which was first developed during the French Revolution ( end of the 18th century), is a decimal based system of measurement.

A general set of prifixes is used when really large or really small measurements need to be indicated. The role of the prefix is to indicate the factor of 10 by which the unit needs to be multiplied or divided, e.g. Kilo indicates multiply by 1000 ; milli indicates divide by 1000, ect.

Example of metric system units of measurement include : Kilogram centimetre, millimetre, seconds ect.

NOTE!   You will be working with the metric system and are expected to learn the conversions and work with them from memory.

Task

1. Convert the following.

1.1  59 m to cm

1.2  6 mm to cm

1.3  9412 m to km

1.4  3.5 km to cm

2. The average lenghts of different snakes are given below

Green anaconda : 543 cm

Burmese Python : 4260 mm

King Cobra : 6.1 m

Which snake is the shortest? Show all calculations.

This video enlighten us on how we can apply these measurements on real life situations.

Moving forward to more challenging things, we will look at how we as a class can use the measurements on a real like context, and using out surrounding environment e.g Inside the classroom inside the school yard.

Conclusion

As a class we will be revising the work already covered. I will be reminding the learners about our main points and carry on to touch a bit on the following lesson wwe will have. There will be new concepts and try to use CONVERSIONS INVOLVING IMPERIAL UNITS OF LENGHT AND DISTANCE.
