CAT Lesson Plan Grade 10

Introduction

CAT Grade 10 Lesson Plan

Objectives:

  1. Do SUM, MIN, AVERAGE, MAX.
  1. Know the theory of excel with the practical, e.g. what is the name box, formula bar, and different type of cursors.
  1. Formatting, e.g. making the work book look more readable.

Introduction

Greet Learners.

Open a new workbook. Type in the function (NOW ()). The date, time of the current moment will show.

In excel there is always a easy and quick way in finding a answer. If you want to go to a specific answer, excel has a build in function.

For example you can go to the formula tab and show them all type of formulas. Learners attention is captivated and we begin our lesson.

Task

Basic Functions

For the most common calculations with numbers there are a number of functions already defined in excel. They can be used for example to determine the total, average, minimum and maxmum.

Format of a function

The general format of a function is as follows:

Argument: cells and/ or values on which the function is based on.

Name of a function

A function always begins with an equal sign.

=  FunctionName (Agruement(s))

Name of function

What the function does

Example

SUM

Calculates the sum or total.

=SUM(B2:E2)

AVERAGE

Calculates the average value.

=AVERAGE(A2:A7)

MIN

Calculates the minumum value.

=MIN(B2:B10)

MAX

Calculates the maxmum value.

=MAX(C2:C12)

Theory questions based on excel

  1. What is a spreadsheet and in which Microsoft office suite will you find spreadsheets in?
  2. What is spreadsheet used for?
  3. Explain the difference between a function and formula?
  4. Give an example of a function that would be displayed in the formula bar?
  5. Give an example what would be displayed in the name box (cell references)?
  6. The unique address that is generated in the name box where does this information come from?
  7. Describe what is a range?
  8. What is the process of auto fill?
  9. How can auto fill benefit u when working with spreadsheets?
  10. How can data be corrected when entering the data by mistake?
  11. The cell currently being worked on is known as?
  12. What does a formula or function begin with?
  13. Name the two ways of inserting or selecting the range for a function?
  14. Give two example of the type of things that can be auto filled in spreadsheets?

The above questions, if we answered, will equip you with the necessary skills need to complete the spreadsheet. This is the basis. If cannot answer the questions or do not still know how to complete the task, refer to the credits section for additional information.

Process

Teacher's actions:

Direct Instruction: Class Discussion.

Do auto fill in new work book.

Inquiry: Problem Solving.

Find the SUM, MIN, AVERAGE, MAX. Will call learners up to do these 4 functions.

Direct Instruction: teacher presentation and explanation.

Explain how to unhide and hide columns. Point out the different cursors as well.

Co-operative learning: Quiz bowl

Questions

  1. What does a formula or function begin with?
  2. Explain the difference between a function and formula?
  3. The unique address that is generated in the name box where does this information come from?
  4. Describe what is a range?
  5. Which tab in the ribbon contains the basic formatting commands?
  6. How do u save a spreadsheet under a new file name?
  7. When trying to find out the longest and shortest length of someone’s height which functions will be best suited?

Hand out handouts. Let learners do activity on their own: Activity consists of standard formatting and function.

Learner's actions

Learners listen and take notes. Responds to my questions.

Answers

  1. It begins with =.
  2. Formulas are used in excel to perform calculations by using operations like +, -, *, /. Functions are calculation that is already defined in excel, e.g. SUM.
  3. The information comes from the active cell which the cursor is on, there columns and rows.
  4. The range is the selected columns and rows that is going to be used in a calculation
  5. The HOME tab.
  6. File, save as.
  7. Min for the shortest and max for the longest height.

Evaluation

Judgement throughout each stage

Stages Assessment of:
Introduction  Here I will look how response and engaging the student is. The attention and captivation is important and how they respond.
Task  Here I will see how well students answer the questions, if they can answer the questions, this means they know what to do and how to do and most importantly they have the knowledge to do it.
Process How learners use the data and their knowledge and combined the two to complete the task and also following the steps laid out by me.
Evaluation  Learners must complete tasks and it needs to be answered like below.
Conclusion  To assess how well learners responded to the topic, what they understood or did not understand and how we can bridge the gap.
Credits Additional sources for learners to use at their disposal if need be.

Theory questions based on excel answered

  1. A spreadsheet is an application designed for the manipulation of numbers. Spreadsheets will be found in excel.
  2. Spreadsheets is used for example to set up budgets create profit and loss statements and reports.
  3. Formulas are used in excel to perform calculations by using operations like +, -, *, /. Functions are calculation that is already defined in excel, e.g. SUM.
  4. =SUM(B40:B45)
  5. A1
  6. The information comes from the active cell which the cursor is on.
  7. The range is the selected columns and rows that is going to be used in a calculation.
  8. To auto fill u have to self the items one would like to auto fill then bring the cursor to the corner of the selected item then wait for the two way black arrow to appear then drag down or double click.
  9. Auto fill will make entering data with a sequence go quicker.
  10. To replace data in a cell, simply go to the cell and type in the new data.
  11. As the active cell.
  12. It begins with =.
  13. You can select the range by going to the columns and rows and selecting it with the mouse or you can type the range in.
  14. Numbers and the months of the year.
  15. To make the spreadsheet more readable for the audience.
  16. The HOME tab.
  17. HOME tab, number and category is general.
  18. File, save as.
  19. The ribbon of excel is similar to word.
  20. Min for the shortest and max for the longest height.

Conclusion

Teacher's actions

To conclude lesson, ask learners, what they can do at home to incorporate excel in there day to do to live. If your mom goes shopping and comes home with 3 chickens at R50 each and 2 milks at R10. How can u get that total and what function can you use to get the cheapest and most expensive item.

Learner's actions

Can download the excel app on their phones. With it being on your phone it is easier access.

Miss can use SUM, MIN, MAX.
