Sonnet Assessment Task : Grade 11

Introduction

This is an individual assessment based on Sonnets.

This assessment should be completed in order to evaluate and see the if the learner has understood the content that was taught and could put their content knowledge to work practically. Providing an indication of what is understood, misunderstood and what could be improved.

Aims:

  • To provide learner with sonnet reading skills and actively make sense thereof.
  • Relaying the information read by paraphrasing it based on the question that was or is being asked.
  • Learners would be able to distinguish between what a sonnet  is, via the annotation of the poem, by using comprehension strategies, visualizing and recognizing the text type by its structure and language features.
  • Develop critical language awareness and distinguishing between the direct and implied meanings, e.g., metaphors, themes, imagery etc.

Task

During the WebQuest

  • The learner’s task is to complete practical task questions based on Sonnets. The learner will navigate through various media streams and search tools, such as YouTube and Google websites.
  • The learner will have to use their content knowledge and implement it in a practical assignment, which determines the level of understanding and comprehension of the content taught.

 

By the end of this WebQuest

  • The learner will have navigation skills as the task requires the navigation between different media and searching tools.
  • The learner will have a better understanding and appreciation on the elements of a sonnet, its structure and the message and themes thereof.

Process

Step 1:   Search for and choose a Sonnet that you will work on (choose one only). Make sure to provide a copy of the sonnet or rewrite the sonnet.

Step 2:  Evaluate and determine the structure and provide the Annotation. If what you have chosen is a sonnet with evidence by answering these questions:

  1. How many lines does the sonnet have?
  2. What is the rhyme scheme/ does it have one?
  3. If it does have a rhyme scheme, what type of sonnet is it?

Step 3: Provide a biography of the author and background information of the sonnet.

Step 4: Come up with different themes displayed in the sonnet and write a paragraph each explaining the themes you have chosen and why?
