Introduction

The planet we live on is a part of the solar system. The solar system is a collection of planets and their moons in orbit around the sun, together with smaller bodies in the form of asteroids, meteoroids, and comets. Would you like to learn more about the solar system? Let's go!
Task
In this WebQuest, students are expected to explore the solar system. After exploration, students must be able to:
1. Define the solar system.
2. State the elements in the solar system.
3. Identify and name the 8 planets in order of distance from the sun.
4. Recognise something special about each planet.
Process
The learners will watch two videos on youtube entitled " Solar System 101" and "Planets of our Solar System for kids". These videos will provide the students with the necessary information about the solar system. The videos will provide students with a definition of the solar system. The elements in the solar system will also be listed. Excessive information on the planets will be given including their distance from the sun, unique facts, etc.
Based on knowledge gained from the videos, the students will then record their understanding of the solar system in a word document. In that word document, Students must give a brief description of the solar system, they must be able to list the elements of the solar system and they must be able to identify the planets. In identifying the planets, the students must list them, talk about their distance from the sun and also state a unique factor about each planet.
The learners will then be required to create a PowerPoint presentation on the solar system.
Evaluation
The rubric below will be used to grade the students' performance.
| # | 8 MARKS | 6 MARKS | 4 MARKS | 2 MARKS | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Definition of the Solar System | The definition is clear and contains at least 4 important terms relating to the solar system. | The definition is clear and contains 3 important terms relating to the solar system | The definition is clear and contains 2 important terms relating to the solar system | The definition is clear but contains no important term relating to the solar system | |
| Elements in the Solar System | At least 5 or more elements were listed. | At least 4 elements were listed. | At least 3 elements were listed. | At least 2 elements were listed. | |
| Identify and name Planets. | All eight planets were listed and identified. | 7 or fewer planets were listed and identified. | 5 or fewer planets were listed and identified. | 3 or fewer planets were listed and identified. | |
| Recognized something special about each planet. | At least one unique feature of each planet was stated. | A unique feature was stated but the name of the planet was not present. | The planet was stated but its unique feature was not listed. | An attempt was made to list a unique feature. | |
Conclusion
You have come to the end of the lesson. Check to see if you have gained knowledge based on the tasks given:
1. Define the solar system.
2. State the elements in the solar system.
3. Identify and name the 8 planets in order of distance from the sun.
4. Recognise something special about each planet.
