Introduction

Welcome: Automotive Technology students during todays class we will be learning about a drum break system and how to properly remove inspect and replace all parts of the system.

Course: Automotive Technology

Topic: Drum Brakes

How can I save money and work on my own car? Am I getting overcharge by a dealership for the work they are doing? How hard is it to inspect a drum brake system? These are all questions that many ask when taking their car in to get worked on. 

In todays lesson we will learn about a drum brake system on a car and see how easy it is for us to work on ourselves.

Task

National Standard: Automotive Technician Consolidated 10.J.4 :Remove, clean, and inspect brake shoes, springs, pins, clips, levers, adjusters/self-adjusters, other related brake hardware, and backing support plates; lubricate and reassemble.

Performance Objective: Students will have 15 minutes to demonstrate(physically) how to remove inspect and replace a brake drum system according to the teacher’s rubric. 

In todays lesson students are going to learn about the brake drum system and they will show their learning to the teacher by correctly removing, inspecting, and replacing the brake drum system.

Prerequisites: The prerequisites that you will need to know to complete this task are, be familiar with basic hand tools as well as using online resources to further your understanding and knowledge.

Process

What you are required to do:

-In this Web Quest student are going to watch a series of videos where they will learn about a drum brake system Video 1 Video 2

     1. Students will go online and find a few sources that will help them in memorizing the parts of the brake drum system

     2.  One student will demonstrate to another how to properly remove inspect and replace a brake drum system then the two students will switch roles 

     3. Students will clean up their work areas and wait at their desk for class to dismiss 

Evaluation

Pre-Assessment: Before beginning the lesson today each student is going to answer the "intro question" written on the board at the front of the room.

Students are going to work in groups of 2 removing inspecting and replacing brake drum systems all students should grade their partner based on the rubric provided. Students are also going to quiz each other on part that they remove from the braking system as they take them off to further their understanding.

Post-Test: Once students have completed these tasks they are going demonstrate to the teacher how to properly remove, inspect, and replace a drum brake system to the teacher where they will be graded using the same rubric.

Conclusion

With what was learned in todays Web Quest Students will now know how to properly work on their own brake drum systems 

Students will also have the ability to compete against one another to see who is the fastest at removing inspecting and replacing a brake drum system correctly.  

If students are interested in further learning in the brake drum system they can look up different styles of brake drums from different vehicle manufacturers. (Ford, Dodge, GMC)
