Figures of Speech

Introduction

A figure of speech is a departure from the ordinary form of expression, or the ordinary course of ideas in order to produce a greater effect.

Figures of Speech are based on RESEMBLANCE, CONTRAST, ASSOCIATION AND CONSTRUCTION.  

 

Task

Name the various Figures of Speech in the following 

  • The more haste, the less speed. 
  • I must be taught my duty, and by you! 
  • Pleas, Sleep, my cause and make her soft like thee. 

Process

  • State a few sentences 
  • Now, explain the figures of speech based on resemblance, contrast, association and construction using the sentences. 
  • State a few sentences again and tell the students to solve. 

Evaluation

  • Make a criteria or rubrics regarding to the students performance

Conclusion

Figures of speech lend themselves particularly well to literature and poetry. They also pack a punch in speeches and movie lines.
