Today we will be exploring the life of Helen Keller, a successful author and activist who was both blind and deaf. We will discuss some of her struggles, and will try to create an idea of what she went through to give us a better understanding of her life.

Can you imagine what it was like for Helen Keller to be blind and deaf? To not be able to see or hear anything at all? Grab the bags placed in the middle of the table. Make sure to cover your eyes and put in those ear plugs, because you are going to experience what Helen felt her whole life. Here are the steps to this activity:

  • Two group members will grab their blindfold and cover their eyes. Put your ear plugs in as well!
  • The other two members will grab the items that I will be handing to them. They will be handing the items to the person who is blindfolded and the person who is blindfolded will guess what it is.
  • Switch!

Was that hard? Can you imagine living your whole life without being able to see or hear? Helen did, but with the help of the people around her, she was able to overcome it!

3. Think about some of the difficulties and obstacles you or someone you love have faced in life. How did you overcome them? What are some things that you have learned from Helen Keller after learning about her life that could help you or that person?

Write your thoughts down in your Social Studies journal.
