MATTER AND ITS PHASES

Introduction

What is Matter?

Everything we see around us is MATTER. From the food we eat, water we drink and the balloons we played, those are all matter. Even though matter can be found all over the Universe, we will only find it in a few forms (states or phases) here on Earth.

A. Definition of Matter

Matter is defined as anything that occupies space and has mass.

B. Phases of Matter

There are three main phases of matter namely:

1. SOLID

2. LIQUID

3. GAS

C. Characteristics of the Phases of Matter

1.  Solid

Solids has definite shape, definite volume and molecules are packed closely. Its physical properties often include “hard” and “brittle”.

Examples of Solids:

a. books

b. blackboards

c. stones

d. apples

2. Liquid

Liquids take the shape of the container, definite volume and molecules         can move somewhat.

Examples of Liquids:

a. water

b. juice

c. milk

d. oil

3. Gas

Gases take the shape of the container, expand to volume of the container, molecules are farther apart than the molecules in a liquid and can move freely.

Examples of Gas:

a. Oxygen

b. Carbon dioxide

c. water vapor

d. Helium

Task

Write your answer in the space provided if the given are examples of solid, liquid, or gas. Write S for solid, L for liquid, and G for gas.

           1. hollow blocks

           2. vinegar

           3. chalk

           4. juice

           5. Helium

           6. lumber

           7. paper

           8. soy sauce

           9. Oxygen

         10. steel

         11. milk

         12. Nitrogen

         13. slipper

         14. Guava

         15. softdrinks

First thing I will do is that, that link/about, it contains a video that I will let my pupils watch for them to have a wider knowledge and understanding about matter and its phases.

Then, I will do a further discussion about the topic so that those pupils that do not clearly understand will be clarified.

Next thing is that, I will also provide some realistic and/or concrete examples of solid liquid and gas so that they can touch them and  can elaborate more the topic I am discussing to them.

Evaluation

Now that you learned something about Matter and its Phases. You have to be graded by answering the following questions.Write the letter of the correct answer.

I.

1. Which of the following is NOT a phase of matter?

A. Solid

B. Liquid

C. Gas

D. water

2. The following are examples of solid EXCEPT:

A. paper

B. can

C. milk

D. chalk

3. The following are examples of liquid EXCEPT ONE:

A. juice

B. water

C. steel

D. oil

4. Helium is an example of:

A. Solid

B. Liquid

C. Gas

D. None of the above

5. What is Matter?

A. Matter is anything that occupies space and no volume.

B. Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass.

C. Matter is anything that does not occupies space and has mass.

D. Matter is anything that does not occupies space and no mass.

II.

Arrange the scrambled words then write what word it is and identify if it is solid, liquid, gas.

6. LAPPE

7. CLINEP

8. RETAW

9.GONEXY

10. UILEHM

Conclusion

CONGRATULATIONS AND GOOD JOB MY DEAR PUPILS!

You have now reached the end of our final topic in Webquest. I hope that in this topic you enjoyed and gained a lot of knowledge about Matter and its Phases. Since, you learned today, I am sure that you can now distinguish a thing or material if it is solid, liquid, or gas.

I know by now, you can already define what is Matter, what are its phases and their characteristics and examples. I hope that you will remember this topic and don't forget to share what you have learned to your classmates, friends, and families. And tell them to visit Webquest to learn new and more things.

Thank you for participating.
