Introduction
This Webquest is to teach students about living and non-living things in their community. I choose to use the Webquest because students will remember the content as oppose to regular teaching. This is a way of introducing technology in the classroom to enhance learning and to make the lesson more interesting. This Webquest was created based on the National Standard Curriculum guide, Integrated Studies for the grade two classroom and it caters to different learning styles.
Task
Students should be able to:
- Identify at least five living and non-living things in their community.
- Create their own definition for living and non-living things.
- Work cooperatively with each other
Process
Step 1: The teacher will introduce the lesson by showing a youtube video titled "Living and non-living things". The teacher will connect the powerpoint to the laptop in order for the video to be viewed on the white board. After students have watched the video teacher will ask them what they think the topic of the lesson will be. The teacher will write the respond on the board. Teacher and students will go through the responds together to find out the closest answer to the topic and eliminate those that are not. The teacher will then tell the students the topic for the day is "Living and non-living things". The teacher will ask students to state the names of some of the living and non-living things they have seen in their community, teacher will write the names given on the board. Teacher will then place a chart on the board with a simple definition for living and non-living things as well as examples of some living and non-living things in the environment, students will be asked to identify all the living and non-living things on the chart as well as to create their own definition for living and non-living things.
Step 2: Teacher will ask two students to volunteer to come to the front of the class. The teacher will give both students a paper with living and non-living things. Students will identify and call out the names and the rest of the class will tell whether they are living or non-living. Teacher will write the name as well as the responds on the board. Afterwards teacher and students will have a discussion on the responds given and eliminate any incorrect answer given.
Step 3: The teacher will place an interactive chart on the board titled living and non-living things. The class will be divided into two. Teacher will issue cards out to students with names and pictures that they will place under the correct heading on the interactive chart.
Step 4: After the activity students will be given five minutes to create a table in their notebooks and list at least five living and non-living things and share their answers with the class. This task will be marked and evaluated by the teacher.
