Holidays and Holy Days

Introduction

This assignment will acquaint you with holidays around the world.

You will be asked to do some online research on a holiday and prepare a short presentation on how people celebrate the event.

Task

Watch a video about celebrations around the world.

Pick a holiday you do not celebrate.

Create a presentation about that holiday and how it is celebrated.

Meet with others who have selected the same holiday to share what you have learned with each other.

Make a presentation to the whole class using parts of the presentations you created individually.

Process

Week 1 -

First things first - watch this YouTube video about holidays around the world.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Sv0ac-W8Vc

Next - Select a holiday you do NOT celebrate and do a little research on the web.  Let me know which holiday you selected by Tuesday.  Remember to keep a list of where you found your information.  You are looking for:

  • Who celebrates the holiday?
  • When the holiday is celebrated?
  • How is the holiday celebrated?
  • What kind of food is associated with the holiday?

Now that you have your information, how are you going to share it?  Some ideas include:

  • Create a graphic organizer of your information
  • Find out the rules of a game played on the holiday and be prepared to play it
  • Get together an outfit of traditional dress for the holiday and be prepared to explain why people dress like that
  • Make one of the traditional foods (try the recipe out first, then make enough for the class to enjoy) and be ready to explain its significance

Week 2 -

Get together with other members of the class who picked the same holiday

Prepare a presentation to tell the whole class about the holiday using everyone's individual projects

Friday we will share our presentations

Evaluation

You will be graded on a 10 point scale in the following categories:

  1. Researched appropriate holiday and listed resources.
  2. Created a presentation about the holiday that answered all 4 questions.
  3. Worked with other students to make a class presentation.

Conclusion

Work together with the other members of your group to give a presentation that includes something each of you learned about how people around the world celebrate their traditions.

Encourage students to work together on the presentation, but not all of them will have to present to the class.  If a student does not want to talk, they can work behind the scenes, make the graphic organizer, or maybe as the model for the traditional dress aspect.

This activity will give students an insight on another culture.  By learning the "why's" of a celebration students learn about the history that is important to the other culture in a way that emphasizes the positive aspects of the culture and can associate cultural celebrations with their own traditions.
