Hi Class, I hope everyone is doing well. I know this year has been quite different from all the others but I do know that when you place your faith in God and continue to be optimistic, you will make it to the other end. I believe in you. Let’s work together in accomplishing your goals.
In this lesson, we will look at Digital Citizenship and how you can become a responsible and safe digital citizen.
This unit is intended for you to examine the many concepts of digital citizenship and it’s purpose for technology integration. We will examine ISTE Standard that will focus on dealing with digital citizenship and plan various activities that will foster our understanding and develop it into effective citizens
What is Digital Citizenship?
Now, it is important to understand that when you are using a technological device, you are already a digital citizen. We use technology to set alarms on our phones, to check the time, to listen to songs on YouTube or other music focused platforms, to video chat with friends and family, to play games virtually with others, to create photos, edit videos, create PowerPoint presentations and much more. Technology is facilitated by the internet, and the World Wide Web. When we are exposed to the internet, there are almost to no boundaries. There are limitless information and all sorts of content that are available to any age group. It does not mean it is appropriate for all age groups. There is a need for guidelines and principles that will help users and ensure they interact in respectful ways that will benefit everyone they encounter within the digital universe in which we are all part of.
As Digital users, we should take pride in our country despite being a national or not. We are expected to uphold the customs, morals, values and traditions of our country. We ought to take responsibility for the well being, safety and advancements of our peers and fellow citizen and digital citizens. We must be considerate to all.
Here are 5 Citizenship in the Digital Age.
As good citizens and digital citizens, we:

Advocate for equal human and digital rights for all. - there are 5 million students that do not have access to technology as most of us do.

Work to make the world a better place and make advances for social causes by using technology

Projects positive self-image and understand that the digital world is here to stay

Communicate clearly, respectfully and with empathy in person and via digital channels.

Protect ourselves and others from harm and be mindful of emotional, physical and mental health while engaging with digital tools.

This is significantly important as it represents you as a digital character. These are concerned with the nature of students and your advancements with technology.

Digital Etiquette- Students should be considerate of others when using devices. Electronic standards of procedures or conduct must be considered when using digital devices

Digital Fluency- Students are aware of how to efficiently use technology to positively enhance their tasks/activities

Digital Health and Welfare- Students must ensure they are taking care of their psychological and physical well-being in a digital world

Activity #1: Digital Etiquette- “Our Words Vs. Our Intent”
Note: Students, it is important to discuss certain things as a classroom community before starting the lessons to ensure that there is as much comfort as possible when talking about race and racism. Talking about race and racism will never feel comfortable for all people and that, in some places, everyone may not be completely safe. The goal is to create a classroom community of respect and support.
Instruction: Using the technology “Flipsnack”, create a brochure or newsletter on diversity and why it is important in your classroom.

Activity #2: Digital Fluency
Instruction: In groups of three, use either one of the tools “Flipsnack, PowerPoint, VoiceThread, or Canva” to create a poster for diversity in the classroom.
Your content should have: What is Diversity?, Outline how you feel when someone discriminates you, How to avoid discriminating others?

Activity #3: Digital Health and Welfare
Prepare a PowerPoint or a learning resource of your choice. identify 5 ways in which technology can be negative on your wellbeing and provide methods in improving these negative aspects. For example: Eye strain. Method to improve can be blue light glasses when using devices. Be sure to include images for demonstration. Be creative, be spontaneous, be savy!
