Task

Objective:

After reading the story, the student will be able to use the illustrations and words to describe the emotions of the main characters with 90% accuracy.

Process

Materials:

  • Grumpy Monkey Book
  • Picture Cards
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pencil

Before reading the story, I will ask students what the word grumpy means.

I will have each student share their answer aloud.

When students are done sharing their answers, I will call them over to the carpet and read the story Grumpy Monkey.

"Today we are going to be reading the story Grumpy Monkey. Can anyone tell me what they think might happen in the story."

I will then begin reading the story and pause periodically to ask the students what they think is going to happen next. I will also ask them to describe how monkey is feeling at that part in the book.

After I finish reading the story, I will ask the students questions.

"Does anyone know why monkey was grumpy? What do you think he should do to fix it, and how should he manage his emotions? Did he respond correctly?"

I will now explain the activity. "Look at the picture cards and discuss how the monkey feels in each picture. Imitate his body language and role play the feelings. See if you can find matching body expressions in the book."

After the activity we will move into a group discussion.

Evaluation

Recap, Review, Reteach:

I will make sure every student understands the importance of managing their emotions and not holding them in. I will make sure they also understand the importance of using words and pictures to support their reasoning for their opinions.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is important to be open about your emotions!

"Okay class, for homework, I want you to draw out and explain the emotion from the card I give you at the end of the day. Great Job today everyone!!"
