Task
INTRODUCTION:
-Teacher will call on individual students and ask if they know what a cat, a dog, a bird, and a donkey says. Students will repeat back (in order): meow, woof, tweet, and hee-haw.
-Teacher will ask the whole class if on the count of three, they can make the donkey noise “hee-haw.”
-Teacher will say that whenever she is reading today’s story, The Wonky Donkey, every time she holds her hand up to her mouth, they will make the “hee-haw” donkey noise.
-Teacher will explain what an adjective is: it describes nouns (people, places, and things). She will give an example by calling on one student to tell her the color of her hair. Let’s say if the student has brown hair, then “brown” is the adjective. Teacher will tell students that they will notice different adjectives throughout today’s book.
-Teacher will tell the students to go sit on the carpet as she gets out The Wonky Donkey.
Process
READING THE STORY:
-Teacher reads the title, author, and illustrator. While she does this, she will briefly go over and remind her students what an author and illustrator does.
-As the teacher reads, every time she sees the word “hee-haw,” she will pull her hand up to her mouth. When she does that, the students will make the “hee-haw” sound.
-As the teacher reads, she will describe and define each adjective that they read, such as (but not excluding others): wonky, lanky, and stinky.
-As the teacher comes across each adjective, she will ask her students if any of them know what the word means. Some may know the meaning, some may not. Teacher will only call on students who raise their hands to answer.
Evaluation
EVALUATION: Making a hand puppet with the correct adjectives from The Wonky Donkey
-Students will get out their crayons, scissors, and glue while the teacher passes out The Wonky Donkey activity sheet.
-Students will first color their donkey however they want to.
-After they are done coloring, the students will cut out their donkey.
-After they cut out their donkey, they will go get a brown paper sack from the teacher.
-Students will glue their donkey’s face onto the paper bag. Be careful not to glue the mouth onto the bottom of the bag so that it will open.
-After gluing their donkey down, students will cut out the adjectives from the story and glue onto the donkey body (the rest of the paper sack). Any adjectives that were not in the story will not be glued onto the paper sack.
-There you have it! Each student will have their own personalized Wonky Donkey with the adjectives that describe him/her.
Conclusion
AFTER THE READING:
-After reading The Wonky Donkey and creating their hand puppets, the teacher will commend the students on what great donkeys they were!
-Teacher will ask the students that if from the story, they think they know what an adjective is.
-Students will respond appropriately. If they understand what an adjective is, they will be instructed to go back to their desks for the activity. If they do not fully understand it, more explanation will be provided.
