  • Construction paper
  • Pajama cutouts
  • Crayons
  • Black sharpie
  • Scissors

I will bring the students over to the reading station.

Before reading the book I will ask the students if they know what rhyming words are. The students will raise their hands and I will call on one to answer. The students will say that rhyming words are words that sound the same ending sound.

I will tell them that today we are going to read Llama Llama Red Pajama and I will show them the book. I will ask them what they notice about the cover and they will likely notice that Llama is in bed and that he does not look happy.

I will read the story stopping throughout to ask them questions about the pictures, the emotion he is feeling, and to find rhyming words. I will also point out vocab words and see if the students can define the words.

After they have read I will have the students think, pair, share with their neighbor about rhyming words. I will tell them to come up with sets of rhyming words and share them with their partners. Then I will ask call on students and ask them to share their rhyming words with the class. As they give them the words I will write them on the board.

I will pass out activity supplies with instructions not to touch anything until I give instructions. I will tell them that first they are going to color their pajama handouts. Then I will pass out sharpies and tell them to write a rhyming word on the top and the bottom. After they finish I will tell them to give their sharpies back and cut out their pajamas. Last I will tell them to glue their pajamas and llama head onto the colored construction paper I gave them.

Evaluation

Recap, Review, and Reteach:

I will review one more time what rhyming words are and examples the girls have for them. I will also talk again about the emotions that Llama was feeling when his mama left him. We will also talk about how the issues were resolved in the story.

Conclusion

My conclusion will focus on the kids displaying their llama pajama art and talking about what words they put on it.
