Introduction
SL.2.2 Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media |
TTW ask the class if they have ever read the book, “The Three Little Pigs”. The class will share their answers. Then TTW ask the students what animals they think are in the story. TTW ask the class if they have ever seen these animals before. Then TTW tell the class that today we are going to read the book “The Three Little Pigs”. |
Task
After the class has read the book, TTW start a discussion about the book. TTW ask the class who the main characters were, what kind of houses were built, who built which house, which house was built first, second, and last. TTW also ask questions for the students to discuss like, whose house got blown down first, what happened when the house got blown down, which house did not get blown down. After the class discusses these answers, TTW pass out construction paper, a paper with pictures on it, crayons, glue, and scissors to each student. TTW say that as a class, we are going to color the pictures of specific scenes from the story given to them. Then, the class will cut out the scenes and glue them down on the construction paper in order according to the story. All together the class will share the order of events from the story. After this project, TTW put students into small groups. TTW hand out a worksheet to help with comprehension. The worksheet will have questions regarding the story and sequences of events and key details. |
Process
TTW tell all the students to go sit on the carpet together. Then TTW pass out the book, “The Three Little Pigs”, to each student. TTW inform the class that they will be reading this book today. TTW ask the students to read the title of the book out loud. The class will say the title together and the author. TTW ask the class to look at the cover and predict what they think the book is about. The class will say their ideas and answers. Then TTW tell the class that we are going to look through the pictures in the book. TTW have the children take a quick “book walk”, by turning the pages of the book and noticing characters, or other things that give clues about the content. After students have time to look through the book, TTW say things like, “The story is about three pigs who build houses for themselves. Have you ever built a small house or fort? Did your house/fort break or get destroyed by something or someone. As you listen to the story, try to remember the main characters and what happens first, second, third, and so on, and who does what in the story. The teacher asks the students to whisper read to themselves as the teacher reads aloud.
