Order of Operations Equations
Steps, understanding, practice!
On this WEB Quest you are going to learn and practice using the order of operations (PEMDAS) when completing a math problem.
Task
|
If given a math equation, to solve for the correct answer which order would you solve the problem. For instance 7+(2+3)x2=?. You would do what first ? PEMDAS
Group 1 : 7-2^3= 9x(1+1)= (1+6)+7= 2+3 x 4 =
Group 2 :
(4+3) x (2+5)= 7-2 x 3= 16- 2^3= 9+ (4-3)=
|
Process
the order of operations is remembered by PEMDAS:
Parentheses first
exponents
multiply
divide
addition
subtraction
No matter the order the problem is set in you go in order of the operations.
Evaluation
The biggest thing I am looking for is to see if you and your group can remember the order of operations and follow PEMDAS no matter the order of the problem.
Conclusion
This page is to help you understand and get practice with the order of operations and being able to follow the order that is PEMDAS. It is to get fifth graders familiar with and more comfortable with the concept before larger equations are given.
