TRAITS

Introduction

Today we are going to learn about inherited traits! We are going to look at different animals and even humans! You will be using making observations of different species. First, we are going to learn about traits and what they consist of. As you work through each task, complete the graphic organizer.

Task

You and your partner will learn about inherited traits! As you read about inherited traits, you will complete a graphic organizer. Once you have the graphic organizer completed, you will answer questions to test your understanding of the topic!

After you have researched information about inherited traits, you are going to investigate the different traits of your class. You will complete a questionnaire about human traits and compare your answers to your classmates. We will create a bar graph to compare the similar and varied traits!

Process

What is a trait?

Like mother, like daughter? - The Game Gal

A trait is characteristics of individuals that can be inherited from parents.

This image is of a mother and daughter. The daughter has inherited her mothers nose and eye shape.

VIDEO

This video will help you understand inherited traits in animals! Pay close attention! It will help you answer the questions at the end of this WebQuest!

You can stop watching the video at 3:22.

Every species has certain traits. A species is a group of similar organisms that can reproduce. The features that help us know what an organism is are called traits. When an organism gets its traits from its parents, they are inherited traits. The traits are passed down from parent to offspring, or children.

Evaluation

Now it's time to see the inherited traits of your classmates!

When you are done, you will turn in your questions and graphic organizer.

I will give you a questionnaire about inherited traits. You will answer the questions about yourself. When you are done, you will add your answers to the class bar graph. Answer the questions honestly! If you are unsure, ask your partner!

Conclusion

You've completed the questionnaire and recorded your answers on the class bar graph! I am SUPER excited to see the similarities and variations of inherited traits that are in our class room!

3-LS3-1

Performance Expectation: Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence that plants and animals have traits inherited from their parents and that variation of these traits exists in a group of similar organisms.

Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on organisms other than humans and does not include genetic mechanisms of inheritance and

prediction of traits. Data can include drawings, photographs, measurements, or written observations. Patterns are the similarities and differences in traits shared between offspring and their parents, or among siblings.

Disciplinary Core Ideas: INHERITANCE OF TRAITS: Many characteristics of organisms are inherited from their parents. (UE.LS3A.a)

VARIATION OF TRAITS: Different organisms vary in how they look and function because they have different inherited information (UE.LS3B.a)
