Dr. Seuss's ABC

Introduction

Grade: Kindergarten - 1st Grade

K.RF.3.3 Orally blend the onset (the initial sound) and the rime (the vowel and ending sound) in words.

Task

Objective:

Students will be able to pair a letter with a picture.  The letter must be the first letter of the word that is pictured.

Process

Materials:

  • The book- Dr. Seuss's ABC
  • Individual, lamented pictures
  • Letters (lamented, letter magnets, or foam letters)
  • Zip lock baggies

I will ask my students to say the alphabet with me.  Once we say the alpabet together I will ask them if they know any words that begin with certain letters.  I will not do all 26 letters but I would ask a few of them.  I will read the book to them. Then I will hold up all 26 lamented pictures and as a class say the name of each picture.  For example, I will hold up the picture of an apple and ask, "What is this?". The students will respond, "apple".  The students will then get a few pictures and a few letters, which would have been sorted into baggies ahead of time.

Evaluation

Recap, Review, and Reteach:

I will make sure the students can tell me the picture and the letter they paired together.  If they are not correct then I will sound the word out with them to help them find the correct letter.

Conclusion

Special Circumstances:

For students who are more advanced, I will hand them baggies with about 10 pictures and letters.  Their baggies will have either a few extra pictures or a few extra letters.

For students who may have a learning dealy, I will give them baggies with about 3 pictures and letters.  Their baggies will have the same number of letters and pictures.

For the typical students, they will get a baggie with about 6 pictures and letters.  Their baggies will have the same number of letters and pictures.
