Process

Materials

  • The Bad Seed by Jory John
  • Colored pencils/markers
  • Event Cards
  • Assigned Scene to each student

I will begin this lesson by asking my students "How do you know what's good and what's bad?" to bring their attention to this task. I will then call on 3 - 5 students depending on how long each answer is.

I will then ask the students what parts a story has. After 5 student answers, I will explain anything that was left out. The answers I will be looking for are setting, characters, and events. If they do not know what any of those are, I will explain to them.

Next, I will explain that we're going to read a book called "The Bad Seed" and that I want them to keep in mind the parts of the stories that we just talked about because they'll be important later.

After we read the book, we will discuss the next thing the students will work on. Their goal is going to be to draw their own version of an event they are assigned from the book. They must include the main character in the picture they draw. Once the students have completed the drawing, we will come back as a whole group. The students, as a whole, will put their scenes in order with help from me when needed on the wall. They will put the event card describing their scene below their pictures. After this, we will discuss who the main character is, what the settings of each scene are.

Evaluation

The evaluation will be completed using an exit ticket. The student will list the main character, one of the settings, and two of the events of the story.

Conclusion
