COVID-19: What are you?

Introduction

Students hear every day on TV and social media about this thing called COVID-19, but with too many different sources, and some of them are fake and dangerous to them and their loved ones. They will discover everything they need to know and more about this virus through the use of ICTs – they will learn about it and how it has changed our world since it appeared in our lives. They will know the safety measures recommended by the World Health Organization and those which rule in their school. Coronavirus will be learnt by reading different articles online and explaining the information obtained to the rest of the class through presentations, videos, or songs!

Task

Students will be separated in groups of 4 and they will have to gather proper and formal information about this new disease. Among the information they will have, they will research about the background of the disease, the symptoms it causes, how can we fight against it and any other topic that students may find interesting.

Process

The students will have to choose between the following topics:

  • Background
  • Symptoms
  • Measures to be taken outdoors
  • Measures to be taken in school
  • Other topics suggested by the students

In the first session we will make heterogenous teams and watch a 20 minutes documentary from Netflix. After the video they will have a vague idea of the virus. We need to assure that they are even more confused at the end of the video, so the learning process becomes more effective.  As the documentary is finished, they will choose the topic suggested or any other related and they will have to find relevant data to make a group presentation for the rest of their classmates. This presentation can be in any creative form: poetry, role play, song, formal presentation, or any other format considered by the students. As they finish it, an activity created by the group will be presented to the class to evaluate if the whole class has understood the topic.

Evaluation

Standards must be fair, clear, consistent and specific to the set of tasks. An effective assessment tool to evaluate our students with this Web Quest is a rubric. Here we show one of our own:

Conclusion

After the students finish their work in this Web Quest, they will have to summarize what they have learnt about coronavirus and its measures. In this section we must make sure that everything is well understood, since these measures are now a reality and we must apply them in our daily life.
