FIGURES OF SPEECH

Introduction

  • Figures of speech are words or phrases used in a non-literal sense for rhetorical effect. They often express their meaning by comparing one thing to another, and serve an unequalled role in the English language.
  • Figures of speech make up a huge portion of the English language, making it more creative, more expressive, and just more interesting! 

 

Task

  • Define the following most common figures of speech. After you have defined them, write any form of a poem consisting at least five of these figures of speech. 
  • Figures of Speech:
  1. Simile
  2. Metaphor
  3. Pun
  4. Hyperbole
  5. Personification 
  6. Alliteration
  7. Assonance
  8. Consonance

Process

  • In order to complete the task, you must:
  1. Research Figures of Speech and their definitions. 
  2. Use them in a sentence structure. 
  3. Understand how to use them properly in order to make a creative poetry. 
  4. Apply them into a poem to showcase your creativity.

  • The task will be evaluated based on the criteria:

          Organization – 10%

          Use of Figures of Speech –35%

          Cohesiveness – 15%

          Creativity – 40%

  • After reading about Figures of Speech and apply them into your own writing, you will be able to write a more creative and more interesting poem that will catch the attention of the readers.
