PART 3 - THE LITERATURE CONNECTION
For this part, you will be reading a picture book set in your country. It will connect you to the culture and people of South America. During class, you will listen to the stories for all 6 webquests. Each book has remarkable characters and illustrations. You will be making a mini-book that reflects your understanding of the read aloud. When you do the writing for the mini-book, we recommend that you cut an index card to fit each page and write your answers neatly on the lines. This way, if you make a mistake, you can redo it before gluing it into the book. Make sure all of your answers are completely clear since the questions are not going to be copied into your book. Any reader should be able to know what you are talking about because you restated the question or clearly labeled your lists or charts. We will be making mini-books in class.
The story set in the pampas of Argentina. It is a legend called THE MAGIC BEAN TREE. In it, a young boy's courage and faith explain why Argentinians believe that good luck can be found in the shade of a carob tree.
Ok, now that you have heard the story in class, you are ready to answer some questions and make a book. There are few steps.
1--We will construct the mini-book in class together. You will have extra cards in case you mess up your drawing or your writing. You can cut the cards up and glue answers into the actual book so you don't write directly on the book pages. You can also use the lined side of index card pieces by trimming them so you can write neatly and straight across for each answer and then glue them to fit nicely onto the pages.
2--- Write the title neatly somewhere on the cover, not too big because you need to fit a picture too! But make it colorful and thick-lined enough to stand out like a title should. Draw an illustration from the story and color it fully. There should be no white space on your cover when you are done, like a real book cover. It will look amazing!
3---Read the questions for page 1, 2, and 3. (Remember you are not writing on the inside of the cover.) Write your answers on page 3-3 in your notebook before you plan to write in the little poster book. On page 3-3 divide it into 3 sections by counting down 9 lines and tracing it and then counting up 9 from the bottom and tracing. Make sure you restate the 3rd question because it is a RADD format. Restate, Answer, Detail, Detail.
Question 1---Find 2 animals from the story and discover how they protect themselves from the heat. Write 2 complete sentences, one for each animal, being sure to include its name and its adaptation.
Question 2---Make a list with a title of 3 things the carob tree brings.
Question 3---RADD. What character trait helped Topec save the pampas? Use two details from the text to explain your response.
