PART 3 - THE LITERATURE CONNECTION

For this part, you will be reading a picture book set in your country.  It will connect you to the culture and people of South America.  In class you will listen to all the picture books in all 6 webquests.  Each book has remarkable characters and illustrations. You will be making a mini-book that reflects your understanding of the read aloud.  When you do the writing for the mini-book, cut an index card to fit each page and write your answers neatly on the lines. This way, if you make a mistake, you can redo it before gluing it into the book. Make sure all of your answers are completely clear since the questions are not going to be copied into your book. Any reader should be able to know what you are talking about because you restated the question or clearly labeled your lists or charts.

The story set in a coastal village in Chile. It is a beautifully illustrated folk tale about a merchild who shows the true nature of a lonely old woman who is scorned by the village children.

Ok, now that you have heard the story in class, you are ready to answer some questions and make a book.  There are few steps we will do in class.

1--Follow directions in class to make the mini-book.  You will have extra cards in case you mess up your drawing or your writing.  You can cut the cards up and glue answers into the actual book so you don't write directly on the book pages. You can also use the lined side of index card pieces by trimming them so you can write neatly and straight across for each answer and then glue them to fit nicely onto the pages.

2--- Write the title neatly somewhere on the cover, not too big because you need to fit a picture too!  But make it colorful and thick-lined enough to stand out like a title should. Draw an illustration from the story and color it fully.  There should be no white space on your cover when you are done.  It will look amazing!

3---Read the questions for page 1, 2, and 3.  (Remember you are not writing on the inside of the cover.) Write your answers on page 3-3 in your notebook before you plan to write in the little poster book.  On page 3-3 divide it into 3 sections by counting down 9 lines and tracing it and then counting up 9 from the bottom and tracing. Make sure you restate the 3rd question because it is a RADD format.  Restate, Answer, Detail, Detail.

Question 1---Make a list with a title of the treasure Mariana found after the storm.

Question 2---What is a ramshackle hut?  The author uses this word to describe the hut more than once.  Use the illustrations and descriptions to come up with a good definition of the word and examples of why it describes Mariana's home.

Question 3---RADD. Why is it important to the story that the children change their feelings about Mariana?  Use two details from the text to explain your response.
