PART 3 - THE LITERATURE CONNECTION
For this part, you will be reading a picture book set in your country. It will connect you to the culture and people of South America. During class, you will to listen to all the picture books in all 6 webquests. Each book has remarkable characters and illustrations. You will be making a mini-book that reflects your understanding of the read aloud. When you do the writing for the mini-book, you will cut an index card to fit each page and write your answers neatly on the lines. This way, if you make a mistake, you can redo it before gluing it into the book. Make sure all of your answers are completely clear since the questions are not going to be copied into your book. Any reader should be able to know what you are talking about because you restated the question or clearly labeled your lists or charts. We will be making mini-book in class.
You have 2 stories to choose from. The first is about a young soccer player. It is called SOCCER STAR.
The second is about a folk tale about a tricky turtle called THE DANCING TURTLE.
YOU ONLY HAVE TO CHOOSE ONE FOR YOUR PROJECT.
The story SOCCER STAR is set in the favelas, or slums, of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is about young boys who survive in poverty-stricken neighborhoods and dream of being the next Pele, Ronaldo, Garrincha and Marta, world famous soccer stars. It is a beautifully uplifting tale of transcending expectations and the power that comes from being brave enough to light up the world. In Brazil, some children work hard for a living to overcome poverty. These hardships have helped shaped Brazil's solid team of soccer stars who have risen atop the world of soccer.
After up you have heard the story in class, you are ready to answer some questions and make a book. There are few steps.
1--Follow the directions in class as we construct our mini-books. You will have extra cards in case you mess up your drawing or your writing. You can cut the cards up and glue answers into the actual book so you don't write directly on the book pages. You can also use the lined side of index card pieces by trimming them so you can write neatly and straight across for each answer and then glue them to fit nicely onto the pages.
2--- Write the title neatly somewhere on the cover, not too big because you need to fit a picture too! But make it colorful and thick-lined enough to stand out like a title should. Draw an illustration from the story and color it fully. There should be no white space on your cover when you are done. It will look amazing!
3---Read the questions for page 1, 2, and 3. (Remember you are not writing on the inside of the cover.) Write your answers on page 3-3 in your notebook before you plan to write in the little poster book. On page 3-3 divide it into 3 sections by counting down 9 lines and tracing it and then counting up 9 from the bottom and tracing. Make sure you restate the 3rd question because it is a RADD format. Restate, Answer, Detail, Detail.
Question 1---Find evidence that Felino is good to his sister. You must find at least 3 examples and write them in complete sentences.
Question 2---List the jobs each team mate has instead of going to school. Pick at least 4 players. Make a chart and title each column.
Question 3---RADD. Why do the boys from the favela dream of being soccer stars? Use two details from the text to explain your response.
THE DANCING TURTLE is a folk tale has been told by indigenous people of Brazil in villages for hundreds of years. In their stories, Turtle always seem to survive with courage and wit.
Here are the 3 questions from THE DANCING TURTLE.
Question 1---On every page, the illustrator added animals native to Brazil. Find 20 of them and make a list, 2 columns, 10 in each column, and title it Animals Of Brazil.
Question 2---So, the author asks, did the father ever catch the turtle again? No? Why not? You think yes? How? Whichever answer you choose, explain your thinking in more than one sentence.
Question 3---Why did the children trick their father? Use two details from the text to explain your response.
