River Valley Civilizations

Introduction

As you complete this Webquest, you will be looking for significant events in the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China. While conducting your research for your timeline, you will have to decide based off the content what makes an event significant in history. As you choose the events to add to your timeline you should keep in mind the following. 

  • How geography plays an important role in how well civilizations survived and flourish.
  • The four ancient River Valley civilizations had several similarities and differences which lead to various connections because of the similarities and differences they shared. 
  • Irrigation and other environmental interaction that have an affect on the development of the River Valley civilizations. 
  • Government and its role in providing order, structure , and organization for ancient people.
  • How the River Valley civilizations made contributions which influenced later cultures, including modern-day cultures.

Task

During this Webquest you will complete four tasks.

  1. Create an online timeline of the significant events of the River Valley civilizations.
  2. Conduct research to find different events.
  3.  Include a detailed description of each event and its importance.
  4. Create or include previously created visuals aids (photos, or links to videos, and primary resources) to support the events on your timeline.

     

 

Process

The Process

The Webquest process will require you to work through four tasks as you complete your timeline. 

Create An Online Timeline.

To create your timeline you will need to go to the following website: http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/timeline_2/.

  1. First create an account, then click on the "create" tab to create a new timeline. Please do not post any photos of yourself or your friends on your account.
  2. Upload your Webquest via Microsoft Teams.
  3. As you add events to your timeline, use a letter code in the titles to keep your events easily identifiable. Examples on how to code this use an "M" before the title for Mesopotamia, an "E" for Egypt, an "I" for India, and a "C" for China.).
  4. As you record your events in your timeline, keep in mind information and or records from ancient history is limited. Exact dates maybe difficult to find, however,  an approximate date is acceptable for this project. 

Conduct Background Research

Before adding your events to your timeline, you will need to conduct research. Below are some helpful resources and sites that you may find resourceful. You are required to provide a minimum of 5 events for each civilization to add to your timeline (totaling 20 events). Additionally, you must provide a link to the source of information for each event that you include in your timeline.

Describe the Events

For each of the events you add to your timeline , you will need to write a detailed description of the event. This requires three to four complete sentences about the event and why it is an important event in history. In addition, also include reasons why that event is important to us today. 

Provide A Visual Aid

An awesome webquest will include some visual interest. You are required to add a visual aid to each event provided. This can include a photograph or other graphics and or links to videos related to the event.

Timeline Events All 20 events are included and are accurate and significant Three to 5 events are missing. There are several errors. Some events are not significant More than 5 events are missing or are inaccurate.
Description of Events Description are extensive in detail and accurately reflect the significance of events. Descriptions are thorough, but may be missing some detail. Descriptions are poor or missing.

Once you finish your WebQuest, you are required to reflect on what you have learned.  Answer the following questions on a separate Microsoft word document. Please give complete and detailed responses.

  • What patterns do you notice in your timeline?
  • Discuss any similarities the four River Valley civilizations may have had in common.
  • What differences did you find among the four River Valley civilizations?
  • Discuss one specific event that was the most significant event in history? Explain the reasoning?
