Introduction
Welcome dear students!
Culture and language have often been described as inseparable and the relationship between them is highly complex. Language isn’t just the sum total of words, grammatical principles and sentence construction, but also unique cultural norms, social systems and cognitive processes. Understanding these cultural-specific contexts along with linguistic principles of a particular culture is central to effective language acquisition
In this webquest, you will be able to learn about the culture of English speaking countries around the globe. Also you will learn specifically about the best cultural festivals of English speaking countries and in order to do so, this webquest will be of great help.
Task
The purpose of this task is to learn about festivals in the different English speaking countries and to create a collage about one main cultural festival.
Please go on search for new and different places around the world...
Take a trip to any English Speaking country and look for information about:
1. What kinds of things do people celebrate?
2. Why is celebrating these things important to people?
3. Which are the biggest cultural festivals in their country?
4. When, how and why do people celebrate them?
Remember that for this assignment we want to know more about the world around us from you. You need to provide us with details...details...many details!
If you can find pictures that would be awesome as well.
Have fun and use the internet to show us the world.
Process
English speaking countries important cultural festivals
Have you ever made a collage? Well, a collage is an art form in which the artist takes a number of images and/or words and puts them together on a piece of paper, in a frame or on a screen.
Usually, you cut and paste images and sentences from magazines, but you can also make collages on your computer. All you need is a word processing program, PowerPoint, or a website editing program (like Wix).
In this activity, you will make a collage about any festival of an English speaking country. How would you like to celebrate that festival? Let your collage reflect how you would like to celebrate it.
Start by searching for images that you can include. Try searching the internet for images related to that specific festival, music, customs, drinks, dances or anything else you feel might help you celebrate. When you see an image or read a sentence you like, save it in your computer.
As soon as you have a collection of images, open the program you will use to make your collage and paste images wherever you want on the page. You can also add words and sentences if you want. You can edit the images using a photo-editing program and you can edit the sentences in your word processing program (change the size, the font, the colour).
When you finish making your collage, share it with your classmates and explain why it represents your personal view of that specific festival.
Enjoy!!
Evaluation
