Vietnam Quest #1

Introduction

This is one of two quests you will complete over the next two weeks to walk you through the Vietnam Era & the key events. The goal is to not only provide you with the content, but to get you to think about why this war was so controversial and continues to have an impact on the United States even today.

Include all of the task, process, & evaluation work on one document and submit it to google classroom for credit.

*Be aware that there are some graphic images.

Task

1. Visit the History Channel link above about the Tet Offensive, watch the video, and read the article.

2. Answer the following questions in two paragraphs:

 - Why would this event being seen on television in the U.S. create shock in the general population? Answer in 3-5 sentences.

 - Why do you think anti-war sentiment might grow after the Tet Offensive? Answer in 3-5 sentences.

1. Visit the PBS link above about the Massacre at My Lai and work through the 9 features that include images, music, a timeline, etc.

2. Give examples of the terror of this event & how it was seen as a turning point from the following perspectives. This may be done in note format or as a graphic organizer.

    - the American Soldiers 

    - the Vietnamese

    - the American public

1. Visit The History Channel main page for the Vietnam War.

2. Select at least one of the following to explore (take notes):

    - Khe Sanh

    - Cu Chi Tunnels

    - Operation Rolling Thunder

    - Agent Orange 

    - Weapons of the Vietnam War

Evaluation

Compare what you have learned through your tasks for the Tet Offensive and the Massacre at My Lai with your choice of exploration topic in the process section.

Include the following in your reflection 1 page paper:

1. Why is Vietnam such a complex war and era to study?

2. How did the television access and public opinion play a role in the Vietnam Era?

3. What part of your exploration really stayed with you?

Conclusion

Remember your single document google classroom submission will include:

- your notes taken during exploration 

- the 2 paragraphs from task 1

- the notes/graphic organizer from task 2

- the 1 page evaluation paper
