Holidays Around the World

Introduction

All over the world different cultures celebrate various holidays throughout the year. This lesson will let you explore different traditions from around the world to make you become familiar with the various holidays that are celebrated. You will answer questions and conducting research on a holidays from various countries as well as tell about a tradition you celebrate within your own family.

Task

You will learn about holidays around the world. Working in pairs you will use the web links that are provided to conduct research on three countries holidays. You are to then answer questions provided on each holiday you pick. After the completion of the Google web form on three holidays  you will then present your findings to the class. 

After, a wrap up activity will be completed to create your own holiday by writing two paragraphs on how, where and when your holiday is celebrated using descriptive details to describe your holiday. This can be a made-up celebration you would like to have or a family tradition that is celebrated within your own family.

2. Using the web link provided, find one holiday celebrated in that country.

3. Answer the following questions for that holiday on a sheet of paper: 

    What is the holiday name and from what country?

    What is the reason for this celebration?

    How is this holiday celebrated?

    Is there anything that is usually need at this holiday? (example: turkey at Thanksgiving, tree for Christmas)

    List two interesting facts about this holiday.

4. Repeat the first 3 steps for a different county and holiday two more times. You need to have three sets of questions answered for three different holidays and cultures. 

5. Write your answers on the three holidays using this Google form: https://forms.gle/BQHmjcgjohhQBx4m7 

6. Wrap Up Activity:

Create your own holiday by writing two paragraphs on how, where and when your holiday is celebrated using descriptive details. This can be a made-up celebration you would like to have or a family tradition that is celebrated within your own family. You will present your holiday to the class using Google Slides.

Conclusion

This assignment was developed to research different traditions from around the world and to observe your own traditions or to create new traditions to be celebrated within your own family. Presenting these traditions to your classmates and discussing can help understand how different cultures around the world are similar and different in the way they celebrate holidays. 

The objective of this lesson is to identify how each culture has its own tradition, is unique and diverse in the way that they celebrate their holidays.
