Deaf Perspective and Technology Webquest

Introduction

You are an advocate for the Deaf Community in your town. Your goal is to inform the parents of Deaf children who may not have access to any other information. You need to learn all that you can about Deaf perspectives, the technology used by the Deaf Community and also about the different roads these parents can choose for their Deaf Child. Assume that the parents are hearing and that they've never met a Deaf person before. How can you help them choose the best road for their child?

Task

Your task is to educate the parents of Deaf children.  You will create a glog of what you discover.

Make sure that you include the following :

  • How hearing aids and cochlear implants are used and viewed by Deaf people.
  • At least one of the services that the ADA made available. (ex: Interpreting Services, RID (National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf), Videophones, Closed-Captioning and Relay Services)
  • The Deaf perspective of the following terms: Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, hearing-impaired (disabled/handicapped view), hearing, deaf and dumb, deaf-mute, and CODA.
  • The percentage and understanding of the implication of Deaf children born to hearing parents.

After you create your glog, you will do a 3-5 minute presentation of the information you choose to include.  How does this help your hearing parent(s), and why is this the most important information for them to have?

Now that you are an expert on all of these aspects of Deaf Culture, perspectives, and technology- you are going to put what you feel is the most important information into a GLOG that you can share with parents who are brand new to the idea of raising a Deaf child. What should they know, what can they expect, and what services are available? Make sure to follow the task page to include the needed information.
